Howard to miss spring practice

Tennessee’s spring practice begins Friday, but the Vols will be without their leading receiver from last season, Pig Howard.

Vol football beat writer Evan Woodbery officially broke the news last night, though rumors of Howard’s situation have been circulating for some time now. A snippet from the Woodbery article linked above:

The source, who requested anonymity because the news had not yet been officially announced, said Howard has been away from the team due to “personal reasons” and his long-term future with the Vols had not yet been decided.

So not only will Howard miss the spring, but “his long-term future,” with the team is uncertain. Howard led the Vols with 44 catches and three touchdowns, while finishing second to freshman MarQuez North in total receiving yards with 388.

Tennessee’s offense sputtered at times last season, lacking a bevy of playmakers and hindered with inconsistent quarterback play.

The incoming crop of receivers will soften the blow, but obviously losing one of the leading receivers from the previous season hurts the offense. Hopefully spring practice gives us an idea at who might step up and fill the void left by Howard’s absence.
