According to CBS national columnist Gary Parrish, Tennessee basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has removed his name from consideration for the Marquette job and is expected to remain head coach of the Vols
Marquette, who lost coach Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech, met with Martin on Sunday about its coaching vacancy and there seemed to be mutual interest from both parties. At least one media report had Cuonzo accepting the job as of early Monday evening. But just after midnight on Tuesday morning, the news broke that Martin had withdrawn his name.
Director of Athletics Dave Hart reportedly met with Martin on Monday night. This second meeting, ended around 10 p.m. and followed the first meeting which took place earlier in the day. It’s thought that Hart, along with some help, convinced Martin to stay at Tennessee.
Since his buyout dropped from $2.6 million to $1.3 million as of today (April 1st), it was speculated that it might simply be a waiting game for an announcement that Martin was leaving Tennessee.
Martin currently makes $1.3 million per year and is under contract through the 2015-16 season. He’s the 11th highest paid coach in the Southeastern Conference, but that’s expected to change in the very near future.
After finishing his third season at Tennessee with a loss to Michigan in the Sweet 16, Martin now holds 63-41 overall and 32-20 in the league.
