Amidst the somewhat, uhh, tumultuous basketball news of late, Tennessee got some downright good news on the football recruiting front Monday.
The Vols sit atop 5-star quarterback Torrance Gibson’s list of potential schools, placing above teams like Auburn and Ohio State that were thought, by some, to be favored.
Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint, and the American Heritage (FL) QB maintains he will take all five of his official visits before making his decision. So there’s plenty of time for the other schools to change Gibson’s mind, but Vol fans have to be excited to be sitting so pretty in this recruitment, considering the competition and how much better those teams have been recently than Tennessee.
Despite those recent struggles on the field, the Vols are No. 1 on Gibson’s list thanks to the relentless recruiting efforts of Butch Jones and his staff. Gibson has said previously that Tennessee was recruiting him the hardest, and he left no doubts about where his interest in Tennessee comes from during an interview with TSR’s Dave Hooker on Tuesday.

Now there’s been questions about Gibson’s skill throwing the football, and if he’s good enough to play QB in college. I’m no scout, but the kid is absolutely an elite athlete that can sling it around the field.
“I think people overlook my passing,” Gibson said during the interview with Hooker. “Sure, I can run when the play breaks down, but I’m a QB 100 percent.”
Given his size — 6-4, 200 pounds — and electric athleticism, I can see why some would want line him up at WR. But I say put the ball in his hands on every down, and let him go make plays for you as a quarterback. Watch his tape and decide for yourself.
So, what do y’all think? QB or nah? Let me know in the comments section.
