With a 2-1 victory over No. 9 Florida State in game three of the Knoxville Super Regional, the No. 8 Lady Vols advanced to the Women’s College World Series for the seventh time in school history.
Tennessee struck early when Rainey Gaffin scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Megan Greer.
C.J. McClain extended the lead to two in the fourth inning when an errant throw allowed her to score from third.
That’s all the offense Tennessee would need thanks to another outstanding effort on the mound from Gaffin. She earned her 17th win of the season, allowing only one run and striking out four in seven innings of work.
The Lady Vols won the first game of the best-of-three series on Thursday night, but Florida State bounced back to take the second game with a decisive 6-1 victory on Friday afternoon, forcing game three.
The 2015 NCAA Women’s College World Series begins May 28th in Oklahoma City and Tennessee will face the winner of the Florida/Kentucky Super Regional.
