North Korea touts ‘underwater nuclear weapons system’, blasts US drills

North Korea has tested a nuclear-capable underwater attack drone in response to joint naval exercises involving South Korea, the United States and Japan, state media say.

Pyongyang tested the Haeil-5-23 in waters off the east coast as the US and its allies were “seriously threatening the security” of the country and “destabilising the regional situation”, North Korea’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday.

why use a nuke underwater? far cheaper and simpler to just use conventional explosives. its not like we have anything that will survive everything but a nuclear explosion. This seems far far more offensive than defensive.

depending on the warhead type and size it only seems suitable to use on large targets like ports or one of our carriers. Taking out a couple destroyers or cruisers would still be a good return on the monetary investment, but doesn't seem worth the escalation to nuclear war.

speaking of the warhead, it sounds like their warheads are still all heavy metal fission based, and not the more "modern" fusion style the US and Russia have. not sure how well that does deployed underwater, also assuming the delivery type limits the overall size. again still more than enough to take out a carrier, just not seeing it as "worth it" except as a last desperate attack.
