Is Tennessee a factor for Cothron?

North Carolina State took a hit to its recruiting class when ESPNU 100 power forward Luke Cothron decommitted yesterday. Cothron is rated the No. 47 overall player and the No. 12 power forward according to ESPN. The 6-8, 205-pounder received a 95 Scouts Grade.

“It was just too early,” Cothron told VolNation.com when asked about his recent change of heart.

Cothron, who committed back in October, was considered a soft-verbal to North Carolina State but did not sign a letter of intent during the early signing period in November.

When he committed to N.C. State, Cothron was reportedly interested in Tennessee, Alabama, and Connecticut, among others. Now, the talented prospect considers his recruitment to be wide open with no clear cut favorites.

“Right now I’m going to wait,” Cothron said. “I’m going to look at some things.”

Cothron hasn’t set any timetable for a decision.

It’s unclear how big of a factor Tennessee is for Cothron’s services, but he is clearly interested in Tennessee and especially likes Bruce Pearl.

“Personally, me and Bruce Pearl, we’ve got a good relationship,” Cothron said. “I like Tennessee.”

“I know Bruice Pearl, he’s good coach. He’s got a good personality – a good man.”

Cothron admitted that he hasn’t had much contact with Tennssee since the season began so it’s unclear what role the Vols may play in his decision.

Below is the Scouts, Inc. evaluation of Cothron.

January, 2010: Cothron is a combination forward that is more of a power forward but spends most of his time on the floor attempting to be a small forward. He is much more productive 17 feet and in where he can score on mid range shots off the catch and get to the rim with power drives and slashes. At times he will settle for deep jumpers where he average at best. He is much more affective when he is in attack mode around the basket and in transition where he can draw fouls and covert from the free throw line. Cothron is a good rebounder that possesses a quick 1st and 2nd jump and usually brings down everything in his area on both ends. Cothron attempted to do too much off the dribble and his shot selection was horrible. He must also work on his perimeter ball handling when he is under intense pressure. Cothron has a ton a talent but his effort was inconsistent. He also must learn to run to the bench at time outs and not be last to the huddle every time. Cothron could be an excellent ACC forward but time will tell if he will buy into what it takes to make it happen.
