2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Can we move all non transfer news out of here? I have no issue with people discussing SCOTUS rulings and Salary Caps, but this is just not the thread. Let's keep this one to news and options related to targets.
While I understand that, NIL directly impacts in a major way, the transfer portal and it's movements. At least it's not page after page of arguing about how good Alabama is going to be next season.

The actual definition of socialism is government controlling the means of production. Regulation is not socialism. At all. The word socialism is drastically overused in this country as a substitute for a real argument. It’s easier to attack a straw man label than to present a substantive argument.
In a socialist government, the government makes decisions regarding the earnings that can be made for goods and services. People are suggesting the government restrict what two parties are willing to pay each other for goods and services. In this case, it's exactly the same as suggesting that the government regulate how much an actor or musician can make for the services they provide. How much you want to pay Dalton Knecht to show up at your kid's birthday party should be between you and Dalton Knecht. The government doesn't need to make regulations saying you can only pay Dalton Knecht 50 dollars to show up, or that Dalton Knecht can't accept more than 50 dollars to show up. That is socialism.

It's college, dude--or used to be. They're college //students//--or used to be. Stop with the political "socialism" nonsense.

Your repeated use of the term "boomer" as a pejorative makes me think you live with mommy and daddy and have a safe space.

You are trying to control the means by which an individual can use their own likeness to make money. If I paint a portrait and want to charge 40 billion dollars for it, and find a buyer, that's between myself and the buyer. The government doesn't need to step in and control the art market. The market will regulate NIL. There will be winners (big schools) and losers (small schools). No school will ever be able to control how much money is made via NIL, as they are not the ones paying the NIL.

Ok boomer. I’ll use it 10 more times if you keep making arguments that are based in buzz words that are so heavily divorced from actual reality.

And the issue for everyone arguing that we just let this be the Wild West is that these things don’t exist in a vacuum. Allowing unlimited amounts to flow in from a collective which favors one school takes from someone else. Resources are finite. So if you want to end up with a situation in which 5-10 schools dominate unchecked then sure. Unlimited power corrupts and putting checks on it isn’t socialism, it’s common sense. If you want to live in extremist libertarian/Ancap wet dream, then go do that (spoiler alert: it doesn’t exist).

And once again it’s not even necessarily saying that everyone have the same cap. It can be as a percentage of funds or be tied to something else. Asking for a modicum of regulation is not some outlandish request.

I actually agree with your overall premise regarding paying players. But no one is suggesting socialism. A salary cap isn’t socialism. There’s no government entity involved. And regulation also isn’t socialism. Further, we have decided in our society that certain sectors are better funded collectively for the good of the whole…police, firefighters, teachers, the FAA, the military, etc. Those “socialized” entities are necessary.

One could argue that a salary cap is an anti-trust violation or even a cartel. But it isn’t socialism.

Knowing Oats offensive system which is guard and 3 point heavy not sure he is going to get the touches he thinks but he will be great at setting screens for them and collecting the misses! Nice get

Grant Nelson at the 5 scares me way more the way he can shoot when on.....Teams will let Cliff shoot whenever

True, but the teams willing to spend big don't care about that tax, which is why they perpetually spend big beyond that threshold every year. They figure revenue from merchandising, ticket sales, concessions, TV money, etc, from a winning product exceeds the value of that tax.
The league can make the tax as punitive as they want. Driven by the quantity of those that want the protection.

It’s not. Some folks just don’t understand that NIL is going to be separate from what happens if and when the players become employees of the university and are earning a share of the profits or are on salary. NIL is no different than Peyton Manning advertising for Bush’s Beans or Papa John’s Pizza. He took advantage of his Name, Image and Likeness and there is no way to cap it. A cap on salary could come into place if the players become employees of the school and it’s negotiated for all schools. Same as it is for a number of pro leagues today. See the NBA for a good example.
Not convinced making them employees can withstand legal challenge of balance of employees. Can they get DIFFERENT insurance, meal plans, housing and tuition perks, than the professors and maintenance workers et. al. without legal problems. Be fun to follow.

Probably works for UT with our low tax rates. Imagine having to calculate these variables in offer comparisons when all the money to cover that becomes taxable, not just the NIL MONEY.

No offense but please move this conversation to a different area.

I tried to bump the off-topic thread with an NIL post but they didn’t bite 🤷‍♂️

No they can't. It's called collective bargaining for a reason and the scale is set. MLB can't just change the scale to whatever they want on a whim.
