They have SEC network money rolling in. They can pay whatever they want to pay. If they go cheap it's because they chose to not because they had to. Anyone who thinks UTK can't afford a splash hire is lowering the bar and hurting the program IMO.

UT may be able to afford a splash hire, but it's something our AD has never really done.

Preach.

Even before the SEC Network, UT was one of the few programs that could pay the football coach AND the basketball coach. WE ARE NOT KENTUCKY.

With SEC Network funds, UTAD is literally saying they are completely oblivious to the reality outside our back door and they're going to play this as we've done since the 1930s if we don't do this right this time.

Of course, for this particular problem there is an easy, ready-made solution for UT. It will cost $4M more than it should have - and Hart should be fired for that alone - but if Bruce would come back, we should make sure we roll out the Big Orange carpet for him.

Basketball coach at UT will NEVER, EVER make anything close to what we pay our football coach.

What the Footbal Coach at UT makes is completely irrelevant when hiring a basketball coach. The market, experience, and resume dictate what the Men's Basketball Coach should make at UT.

With all due respect, hogwash.

We have or can get the money.

The reality is that the Ath Dept is now up against ponying up the money to get real or telling fans we're going to give you a 2nd-class product and we're ok with it.

Or...this isn't true at all, and it turns out money has to come from somewhere.

By the way OP, what you are asking for isn't realistic...

We have the funds. Hart has admitted such.

All of that is nice, and if it happened, a lot of good coaches would show up. The problem is, we don't have Kentucky money to spend on a basketball coach. Well, I'm sure we probably actually do if we wanted to go that route. We have never done that before, and it wont happen this time around either.

4-5 million, which is what the OP is asking for, for a BBall coach is out of the question at UT. We aren't a basketball school, and we should never pay a coach that type of money unless they earn it by creating a dynasty here. Pearl could have possibly reached around the 4 million range had he stayed long term here, 15+ years, with continued success. Even then, 4 million is a ton of money for a BBall coach. Only 4-5 coaches in the country make that type of money.
