So... is it pronounced Jif (soft g) or Gif (hard g like gift)? Show your work.
Technically both are correct. For practical purposes it's GIF with a hard G. That is because society collectively decided that was how it was pronouced decades ago and the vast majority of people still pronouce it that way. Since it's an acronym with no real etymology to guide it's pronunciation there aren't any hard grammatical rules to follow. You are far more likely to be misunderstood using the soft g "jif" version in day to day conversion, so it's wrong, for all practical purposes. Language is fluid like that.
