Tennessee Softball 2024

It's called interference which it seems the rule was bent around the corner when applied and not called. Bama and the SEC are dirty
It's a badly written rule. When Alabama asked for a review, the umps had no choice but to invoke the letter of the law. Hopefully, it will be changed soon. What was annoying was that Mealer didn't, in any meaningful way, stop the third baseperson from getting to the ball. She got there in time to catch it, as did the catcher. They just messed up because they were afraid of falling in the dugout. The missed catch had nothing to do with Mealer. And it was a foul ball. They dropped it. Another strike on the batter. She was still batting. End of discussion. But that's not what the stupid rule says.

I am more interested in a DEFINITIVE explanation of the call at 3rd base. A pop up in the infield and a runner legally in the baseline returning directly to a base with a defender blocking her return inches from the bag does not seem logical application of the rule.

Edited to add a screenshot.... also showing our lady in defensive posture and the Bama fielder initiating contact.

FOLLOWUP trying to get a rules interpretation......

Specifically, softball's interference rule is defined as "an act that denies a defensive player a reasonable opportunity to make a play (field/throw) anywhere on the playing field. The act may be intentional or unintentional and the ball must have been playable."

1) The player did in fact make it to the screen and fully STOP after contact with a teammate and THEREFORE did have a reasonable opportunity to make the play. So just the presence of ANY contact does not justify calling it interference.

2) Is standing at a complete stop at a base in a protective posture an ACT. In the context of sports, is stopping and seeking refuge of a base as a runner an ACTion?

We should have also called for review of OBSTRUCTION!

The obstruction rule in softball states that:
  • It occurs when a fielder impedes the progress of any runner while not in possession of the ball.
  • Blocking any part of the leading edge of bases or home plate is considered obstruction.

SEE screenshot.... The defender did not have the ball and clearly denied with contact our runners attempt to return to her base.

Don't see where runners rights are superceded by defenders rights.

You could rule that the defender was denied a reasonable opportunity to make the catch, when she had ample time to run till the wall stopped her progress with still enough time after arrival to tangle with the catcher before leaning back into the field of play and missing the ball? Not a rule issue, an interpretation issue. Otherwise known as incidental contact.

Notice her running out of room and actually grasping the wall. Pretty damn reasonable chance to me.....

That is what was crazy about the play because 2 players were in the position to catch the ball, more often than not that ball is caught. At that point Murphy was grasping for outs because with the worst defense in the conference I guess that’s how you alleviate some of that.

A baserunner cannot be between a fielder and the ball in play. Now if she had actually been touching third base, I believe (not sure) she would have been OK and they would not have called interference. It's a bit of a stretch, but I believe it was the technically correct call.

Looks like Georgia is going to take Florida down today lowering our magic number with them to 3. We win tonight it goes to 2. Hope Georgia can win tomorrow as well and we win they are eliminated and we'll have a two game lead with three to play against A&M. Then it will be time to cheer for a Florida win.

What is all this talk about KPI? The Florida-Georgia they're talking about this.

They talked about it during the tennessee game last night & from my understanding it’s like rpi in a way but it takes into consideration opponent win %, opponent SOS, point differential, & match location. The biggest difference from what i read is that it takes into consideration the margin of victory & match location. A lot of different sports use it now & apparently it is accurate. The top 8 in order in the KPI is Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Duke, Stanford, OSU, Ucla, & A&M. I would say that aside from duke most people would agree those are the top 8 teams right now.

Maybe, a wild game so far.

Where exactly is Mealer supposed to go? She can't disappear. And both Bama players botched that catch.
