in Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting

Ted MelineTed Meline (Miami, FL/Booker T. Washington) is an athlete that is starting to receive attention from schools across the country to come and play football for them. The question is, where are schools looking to use Meline once he gets there? Some schools are looking at him as a hard hitting safety, others as a slot receiver, and others want him as the wide out who goes across the middle. VolNation caught up with Mike Tunsil who is Meline’s mentor and advisor for his recruiting to see where Tennessee currently stands.

“Ted is very interested in Tennessee,” said Tunsil. “He has actually set up an official visit to go to Knoxville and check out the UT program when they play South Carolina. I know Ted gets along great with the coaching staff and he thinks they have a really good shot at getting him.”

With a visit already scheduled its clear that the Volunteers will be a major player for this Miami athlete. The question is, who else is Tennessee going up against?

“Ted has a top group of Tennessee, Georgia, Oregon, Clemson, and Purdue,” said Tunsil. “I know right now that the top three in no specific order is Tennessee, Georgia, and Oregon. He has a visit to go out to Oregon with a few other Florida kids and his mom while also having a visit set for Purdue when they play Ohio State. Clemson and Georgia will be his other two official visits but no date has been set yet for those two.”

Earlier in the summer and late spring it appeared Meline was going to decide on which school he would attend and then nothing happened. Rumors circulated Meline had grade issues and schools backed off. Tunsil squashed those rumors with the plan of attack for Ted Meline.

“Ted has a 3.0 core gpa and just recently took the ACT test and scored a 17,” said Tunsil. “That score makes him eligible for all the schools he is currently looking at. In fact Ted will be graduating early this winter and enrolling in the school of his choice in time to partake in spring workouts. He is fully eligible and his grades are on par.”

With his visits set Tunsil gave a peak into the areas that Meline is looking for when choosing his college choice.

“There are a few things he’s looking at but most importantly he is looking at the academic side of things,” said Tunsil. “Ted is looking for a school that has great support staff and chances to get extra help in any area he needs it. He is also looking for a chance to play early. Some schools are looking at him at different spots but he wants to play Safety first. Tennessee I believe is looking at him for Safety. He is willing to try wide receiver but he wants a shot at safety first. The last thing Ted is wanting is a great relationship with his position coach and also the players who are playing the same spot as him. He wants a family atmosphere.”

Volnation would like to thank Mike Tunsil for his time and would also like to wish Ted Meline good luck on the upcoming season. VolNation will track the recruiting process for Meline as it continues to involve the Tennessee Volunteers.

Evaluation: Meline is an extremely talented prospect who competed as a junior at a lower classification school and will get the opportunity to really up his game as a senior. He also has experience as a run-first quarterback and he runs extremely well for a player with his height. Has a lean, slender build and he must add bulk and strength. Is quick and displays good change-of-direction skills. Possesses long arms and a big wingspan to shield defenders. Is a bigger target with soft hands. Is a very smooth, fluid athlete that can accelerate and shows a second gear to run by defenders, but also be a factor after the catch. Looks to have big hands and can pluck on the move and use his long arms to extend and bring down jump balls. His open-field run skills are very impressive and he possesses a slashing style with the ability to cut and change directions well with little wasted motion. While Meline may be very talented with excellent measurables and speed, he is also extremely raw and must become a sharp, polished wide receiver with knowledge of how to attack coverage, feel it around him, locate zones and work to get open. He does not look to have an established foundation of the position yet. From a coaching standpoint, he is a guy you’d love to get your hands on because he has all the green talent that needs to be molded and developed. Overall, Meline is a guy that needs to be tracked and we expect he will see an increase in attention, especially as a senior. Upside is extremely high.
