There seems to be an influx of smaller, “scat” backs making their way into the college football world and proving that there is room for the little guy on the big stage. The class of 2011 has a few of these small backs and one local star in particular is already making a name for himself on the recruiting trail with his silky smooth running style, his aggressive defense and his breathtaking ability as a kick returner.
Devrin Young, the 5’7”, 165 lb running back and defensive back out of Beardon High School in Knoxville, Tennessee reminds some of Noel Devine, who now stars at West Virginia after being a YouTube sensation coming out of high school in Florida. Young plays with a style that leaves you in awe when you watch him play. He is one of those kids who no matter what you try and do, you just can’t seem to tackle him on defense or avoid him on offense.
You can check out his highlight film on YouTube and you will see him making one cut and bursting through the hole for a long touchdown run or you can see him patiently follow his blockers in order to get the first down or sneak into the end zone. He is the type of player that you count on for a few highlight runs every game. Even in the SEC where yards are at a premium, Young is the kind of player who can hide behind the line and make his move through the hole to get those precious few yards.
On the defensive side of the field, he is a great cover corner and also a very aggressive and sure tackler despite weighing only 165. His skills are so versatile that one play on his highlight reel, he lines up as a rush-end in a three point stance and gets to the quarterback before he is able to hand the ball off on an average running play, jarring the ball loose and creating a turnover.
To this point, Devrin is wide open when it comes to college choices and he is excited for September 1st to arrive so that he is able to receive written offers to go with the verbal ones he has already received. “I have said this before and I mean it. It is really great to get verbal offers because you know they like you. When the written offer comes, that is when you know it’s real.”
Devrin has been out to the west coast and enjoyed himself in California on a recent trip out for UCLA’s camp. “Right now, most of my attention is on schools out here because they know about me. I am waiting to see what more schools from the southeast have to say about me. I went out west but that was just for fun. I will be playing my college football out here. I am a southern football player for sure”
As September 1st approaches and the written offers start to flow in, VolNation.com will keep you up to date on the Beardon star’s progress. Look for his name to grow bigger than his stature as the class of 2011 starts getting more attention as their time grows closer. Young is the type of game breaker that will be making some coach happy in the next few years. He may be small right now, but as Jacquizz Rogers and Noel Devine proved last year, he can still have a big impact.

Wow, that kid looks great. Hise two videos alone should get him some offers. To think, he was just a SOPHMORE in those video? wow. I’m glad Tennessee has already offered! Come to Tennessee fellow bulldog! GO VOLS and BULLDOGS!
This kid is the real deal. I have seen him play on numerous occasions and while he is small, he plays big. He is the most elusive high school back I have ever seen and he has a knack for making people miss. Comparisons to Rogers and Devine are about right. The best part about this kid is that he is only a junior, so he is going to get even better.
