Tacoi Sumler (Miami/Fl) hasn’t quite hit the national recruiting stage, but it’s because he’s only preparing for his junior football season at Miami Gulliver Prep. Sumler is considered one of the fastest recruits in the upcoming 2011 class. He possesses the natural speed that will make him a national recruit, most notably his blazing 4.33 40 time. The 5’8, 157 pound junior has the ability to play multiple positions, but is most likely considered a wide receiver at the next level. The future high ranking recruit spoke with VolNation to discuss the early stages of his recruitment.
“It’s going a lot better,” said Sumler. “A lot more colleges are showing me attention. New colleges like Duke, Northern Illinois, Iowa, and other colleges. It’s a broad range of colleges, but I like all of them now. I love hearing from every college. I received five offers on September 1st. South Carolina, Ole Miss, West Virginia, Tennessee, and FIU.”
The Miami native already holds an impressive offer sheet for the first few days of September. Those may be his offers, but what schools are really standing out at this current time.
“Schools like South Carolina, FSU, Duke, and FIU are showing me the most attention right now,” said Sumler. “I’ve been to a few FIU practices this season. Clemson has been showing me a lot of interest too. They have a friend of mine on their team. We actually call each other brothers. He calls me and lets me talk to the coaches. Those schools are showing me the most attention, but I’m open to all colleges that have interest in me.”
Making a college choice is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. The future wide receiver explained what he is looking for in his future choice of school.
“Education comes first,” said Sumler. “If they have the classes that I look for, than that is great. I’m looking for classes in business and finance. That is the type of major I’m looking for. Location and college environment are also important. I want to enjoy my time in college. The last thing is playing time. I want to be on the field early.”
Are the Volunteers currently satisfying his needs?
“Tennessee is fitting that criterion right now,” said Sumler. “I know that Tennessee is a great place to be. It is a lot of fun. The way I look at it, I can go there and compete for a starting position. I have a great relationship with a current commitment. Ralph Williams just committed to them this summer. He is one of my best friends. I see him every day. He tells me about how good Tennessee is and stuff. He tells me about their coaches and things. I already told him that I like Tennessee. He already knows that Tennessee is in my tops, so it’s no big deal.”
Tacoi and his Miami Gulliver teammates are preparing to take the field for the first time this season on September 4th. He explained his abilities and what he needs to work on to prepare for his college future.
“My biggest strength is of course my speed,” said Sumler. “I can blow right past the safety. I am a playmaker. Whenever I get the ball in my hands, I can make a play. One of my weaknesses is my conditioning. I need to get in better shape. I’m playing both sides of the ball and I am tired. I need to get my conditioning back up. I want to go both ways and have no problems.”
Tennessee showed their large interest by offering Sumler the first day they were able to do so. Sumler explained how he will be returning the favor in the future.
“Of course, I will be making a trip up there,” said Sumler. “I think the coach sent me a request to come to one of their games. Actually, it is the next game they are playing. I wrote him back telling him I cannot attend because of a previous engagement, but I’ll be up there.”
Sumler concluded the conversation by explaining his decision date.
“Not really, I always wanted to be one of those players that everybody was waiting on a decision for,” said Sumler. “I like to make my decision on like national television or something. I just want it to be a big surprise.”
