Going into the February signing period for 2009 recruits Tennessee looked like they had an outside shot at getting Bryce Brown to sign with the Vols. Brown eventually signed with the Vols who entered the picture late. Then David Oku another talented running back in the 2009 class followed Brown’s commitment a few weeks later. The future at running back was looking scary for opposing defenses. Brown and Oku together make a very interesting combo. Now in 2010, the Vols are looking to add to the two-headed monster and make it a three-headed monster for the 2010 season as Giovanni Bernard (Fort Lauderdale, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) is making the trip north to check out the Vols program. VolNation.com spoke with Giovanni about his season and his upcoming visit to Knoxville.
“The season is going pretty well for us,” said Bernard. “We played against a team from Ohio and we did really well up there. Now we are focusing on keeping that momentum and moving forward in hopes of winning a state title.”
While Bernard is focused on his season and getting a state title his recruiting process has really started to pick up for him and is slated to visit Tennessee this weekend against UCLA.
“I am actually going up there this weekend to check out Tennessee,” said Bernard. “I haven’t been there before so I am pretty excited. I am going to go up there and see how its run up there and see what they can offer me.”
Naturally one could think having Brown and Oku both at Tennessee and both being freshman would shy away talent, but Bernard said it isn’t that way for him.
“You know, to be honest, those two guys are talented players but I won’t go to Tennessee simply because they are there,” said Bernard. “I actually like the idea of us three all being there. I want to play and I want an opportunity to play early, but at the same time I also understand that you need to earn it and I am willing to fight for that playing time and hopefully by my junior year I am on the field starting.”
While he is willing to wait Bernard talked about what he is looking for on his visit.
“Well first and most importantly I want to see how many guys get to carry the ball in the running back rotation, “ said Bernard. “If I know I will get my chance to carry the ball that will be key. I don’t mean I want to be slated to start or anything, I just want a chance, so to see the staff to let guys show their stuff in games will play a role. I am also looking at the stadium, atmosphere, and the education they can offer me.’
With Bernard’s trip up north to Knoxville just hours a way you can expect VolNation will be on top of his recruiting process and will give you updates as soon as possible.
