Ray Drew (Thomasville, GA/Thomas County Central) is a man of God. He’s been a registered youth pastor since 2005. On the field however, Drew becomes a man poised to attack the offense and bring the ball carrier down to the ground. He’s done it well enough already to earn 10 scholarship offers from schools all over. VolNation.com caught up with this talented 2011 prospect to see how his junior year is going and where he currently stands with the Tennessee Volunteers.

“Right now I am 6’5 240 and I run a 4.65 forty,” said Drew. “The season is going pretty well for us. We had a few hiccups in our game but right now we are ironing out the wrinkles and getting the team straight and ready to go. On a personal note I’ve had a pretty good year so far. My first game I had five tackles and assisted on five more with two sacks. Then last week I had a really good game in my eyes I had seven tackles, two assists, one sack, and I even blocked a punt. I don’t go into any games looking to get a certain amount of tackles or sacks. My theory is that if I do what I have been coached up to do and show up committed to the team my play will come out all right. If I do everything I am coached to do I will have a great game. So I focus on doing what I’ve learned from the coaching staff and our prep work and go from there.”

Clearly Drew has been keeping to his word and is working on doing what he’s coached to do because colleges across the nation have taken notice and scholarship offers have started to trickle into Drew’s mailbox.

“Right now I have 10 scholarship offers,” said Drew. “Those offers are from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, South Carolina, Eastern Carolina, Duke, Tennessee, and also North Carolina.”

With a Tennessee offer on the table early, Drew talked with VolNation.com about his interest in Tennessee early on.

“I like Tennessee a lot right now,” said Drew. “From what I saw last week against Western Kentucky the offense they have installed up there looks really good right now. I also like the stadium. I mean that place is just massive and huge. I love to play in front of a lot of people and the fact its full all the time. The coaches were trying to get me to come up for the UCLA game but it couldn’t work out because of my finance situation. However, I am trying to get up there. Its all about just making sure I can afford the trip and doing it. If I can’t get up to Tennessee then I am going to go to the Tennessee vs Florida game on the 19th. The game is only two hours a way and I can get there easy.”

While Drew has 10 offers already and hearing from many more schools, Drew talked about what he is looking for when it comes to colleges.

“Oh that’s a good question, I have a few certain things I am looking for that I need to see,” said Drew. “First, I want to go to a school where they have a good coaching staff. I want to be at a school where the staff will push me hard on and off the field. I also want to go to a school where winning and competing for conference titles and national titles is expected. I want to compete with and against the best. I am also into tradition and want a school that embraces that.”

While Drew has grown up a childhood fan of the Florida State Seminoles Drew spoke about the possible ‘Nole lean.

“I am wide open,” said Drew. “I don’t have any favorites right now. I am hearing from a lot of schools who haven’t offered like Cal, LSU, Oregon, and UCLA. I get a lot of mail from those schools and I am hoping to get offers from them and learn more about them as well.”

Ray, come on up. We’ll have a hole open for you. We are going to have to stock up on linemen in the next class, so with his stats, there’s a good chance for early playing time, especially with his size and speed. I would like to see some of these guys’ go ahead and commit, but in looking through recruits’ eyes, I can see why they might want to wait. It’s just hard sometimes to know the interest is there and by signing day ? you just don’t know! GO VOLS!!!
