Four-star athlete and Under Armour All-American Demarco Cobbs (Tulsa, Okla./Central) sent shockwaves throughout a pair of programs Thursday. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound versatile athlete switched his pledge from Tennessee to the Texas Longhorns after opening the lines of communication with Texas in late September.

“In the beginning, Texas was always my dream school,” said Cobbs, who is the No. 17 player in the ESPNU 150. “I was being recruited by Texas in the beginning and wanted to commit, but it was before they started taking commitments. Then things just didn’t happen then. We started talking about a month ago. I had been talking to Coach [Bruce] Chambers the most. I exchanged e-mails with coach [Mack] Brown and had been talking with a few of the Texas coaches. It’s nothing against Tennessee. Even when I committed, I really wasn’t for sure. I always had Texas in the back of my mind.”

The switch came as a surprise, but Cobbs simply followed his heart in switching to his childhood favorite Texas.

“I grew up watching Texas and wanting to play there,” Cobbs said. “It’s not too far away from home, and I can’t go wrong going to a place that is great every year that also provides a great education too. It’s where I want to be,”

The newest member of the Longhorns’ 2010 class will be in Austin on Nov. 21 when Texas hosts Kansas. He said he will likely take his official visit in December. Maybe by then, he’ll have a better idea of where he might line up for the Longhorns.

“They are recruiting me as an athlete. In the beginning they were recruiting me as a receiver, but then they saw my highlight film and said I could play on either side of the ball,” Cobbs said. “They have mentioned receiver, safety and even running back. They haven’t touched on a specific position yet.”

Texas now has 20 commitments, including 11 in the ESPNU 150. The Longhorns are also still in the running for the top two prospects in the country, five-star defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, Texas/West) and five-star linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West).

Jeffcoat has Texas and USC in front of Oklahoma, Houston and Arizona State, while many believe Hicks has Florida and Texas at the top with Ohio State, USC and Alabama still under consideration. Hicks has taken official visits to Ohio State and Texas with Florida scheduled for Dec. 12. Visits to Alabama and USC are also still possible.

Cobbs joins defensive tackles Taylor Bible (Denton, Texas/Guyer) and Ashton Dorsey (Tyler, Texas), linebacker Aaron Benson (Cedar Hill, Texas) and cornerback Adrian White (DeSoto, Texas) as Texas commits who will play in the Under Armour All-American game Jan. 2.

The loss of Cobbs hurts the Vols some — he was their highest graded player in the class — but still have five players ranked in the ESPNU 150. They are also in the mix for some of the nation’s best uncommitted players, including five-star LB Jeff Luc (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast) and five-star RB Michael Dyer (Little Rock, Ark/Christian Academy).
