This time of year there are so many rumors floating around and the Tennessee Volunteers always seem to play a part in one way or another. Could the Vols be seeing some de-commits coming or might they be the recipient of some other school’s de-commits? There is so much information flowing right now and it is tough to figure out what is truth and what is speculation. With the Under Armor game in the rearview mirror and the US Army Game on the horizon there is all sorts of news and Vol Nation has been in touch with some of the recruits whose names have been linked with Tennessee.
One of the US Army Game participants who has been linked to Tennessee is California linebacker Josh Shirley. In an interview he gave to another news outlet he mentioned that he is down to four schools and although he did not mention Tennessee in the interview they are still very much in play for him as Vol Nation found out when we spoke with him last night.
“I am mostly down to Miami, USC, Arizona and Washington but I am trying to figure out a way to schedule a visit to Tennessee. I really want to get out there because I love the staff there and they have a strong history on the defensive side of the ball. I have three trips left and I hope I can figure out a time to make it to Knoxville” said the All-American linebacker.
Shirley has been fairly quiet on the recruiting trail but his play on the field speaks loudly as he goes hard on every play and is a ferocious tackler. Shirley has the ability to get to the quarterback as well as drop into coverage and he plans on showing the nation what he can do on Saturday in San Antonio, TX.
“I feel like I have something to prove out here. I know some other guys are ranked higher or whatever but I feel like I can compete with the best of them and I plan on showing that on the field. A lot of coaches have told me how much they like my style of play and once I find the right fit, someone is going to get a good player. Who that is, I don’t know yet but it is getting down to it so I need to get these visits out the way make it happen.”
The four star prospect from Fontana, CA has previously taken trips to both Arizona and Washington and has another PAC-10 visit set up next weekend at USC.
“Yes sir, I am headed to USC this next weekend but I have to finalize that since I need to get to Miami and hopefully Tennessee. I was thinking I may be able to just make an unofficial to USC but I think I will stick with what I have for now. I have three visits left so I could do, USC, then Miami, then UT if I can make it work.”
While he has plenty on his plate and not a whole lot of time to make it work, Shirley plans on taking care of business this weekend before making any other moves.
“After I do my thing out here, it is time to hit the road again and figure out my future. Stay tuned because my mind is all over the place right now and if I visit UT and Miami things could get interesting.”
VolNation.com will stay in touch with Josh to see if he is able to get those visits scheduled and put UT back in the race for his services.

I would say to Josh. If you plan on playing pro you should let Monty Kiffin and ED Orgeron take you through the college system and prepare you to play with the pros. These other coaches are not in the same league as this Vol staff. Any other teams you mentioned miami and usc are OK but they don,t have the best coaches Tennessee does. Be wise pick the Vols.
Come to Knoxville, Josh. It will be a wise decision for your future. As you already know, the coaches are second to none and kinda have a bit of a road paved toward the NFL given the expereience. Monte knows what Nfl teams want and look for in players. Be sincere with your conviction to yourself and wear the Orange and White!! I’ll be looking forward to watching you on Saturdays for the next few years.
GO VOLS!!
