Devrin Young: local spotlight

One of the more intriguing prospects out of the state of Tennessee for the class of 2011 is Bearden High School’s diminutive game breaking running back, Devrin Young. While he stand only 5-foot-7 and weighs in at less than 170 pounds, Young makes big plays all over the field and any time the ball is in his hands, the defense needs to be on alert. Young is one of those guys that if he had a couple more inches and a few more pounds, he would be an elite level prospect throughout the southeast. While the size issue will always come into play, Young doesn’t let that hold him back from being the best he can be.

“I know it will always follow me and it’s something that I can’t do anything about to be honest. All I can do is keep working hard on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom. Beyond that, it is up to other people to decide what my future holds. I know that I can play and I think that plenty of people will catch on to that as I get into my senior year” said the Bearden star.

As it stands now, Young only holds one offer, but it is a good one to start off your recruitment with.

“Stanford offered me a scholarship and that means a lot because they are the best school around and they have an up and coming football program too.”

Young lists Georgia, Arkansas, Miami and Stanford as his list of favorites at this point in time but he says that can change at any given moment.

“It is still real early and I have a whole season left as well as a bunch of camps and combines to help raise my profile to some of these schools.”

Growing up in Tennessee, Young has always had his eye on the University of Tennessee and hopes to hear from the new staff in Knoxville and hopes to get down there to show them what he is all about.

“I have yet to be invited to their junior day, but if I do get an invite I will most definitely head over there and show them what I can do on the field. There are plenty of smaller backs that are doing big things in college football right now and I don’t see why I can’t be the next in line.”

Young has not been in touch with the new staff in Knoxville but he intends on making it had to be ignored by having another standout season as a senior.

While Young prefers the running back spot, he is also a terror on the defensive side of the ball and hopes that maybe his prowess as a cornerback can help earn him some more looks.

“There are some small corners in college ball and as long as you have the speed and agility to stay with the receivers, you have a chance to make a play on the ball no matter how tall you are. I will do whatever it takes to play big time college football and I truly believe that I will get that chance.”

VolNation.com will keep tabs on Devrin Young and keep you in the loop in regards to his progress and what new offers may arise for the local star.
