Sweet Water, AL- Defense wins championships. Every one has heard that at one point or another. But what most don’t realize is that defense is really led in two areas, defensive line and middle linebacker. The middle linebacker is often the brains to the entire defense and is heavily called upon. Alabama is a state often rich with talent and this year is no exception. The Crimson Tide have made huge efforts to lock down the home state first, and then reaching abroad to add to the recruiting list. However linebacker/athlete Chris Landrum is starting to draw national attention, and thus far has kept Auburn and Alabama in a heated battle. Tennessee stepped in with an offer only yesterday, here’s the latest regarding the talented recruit.

“I got 5 offers right now. Alabama, Auburn, Duke, Southern Alabama, and Tennessee offered yesterday. I talked to coach (Darin) Hinshaw yesterday and he offered me. He told me that they like me as an athlete, they are not sure if they like running back or linebacker better. Most schools are recruiting me as a “Mike” or inside linebacker. I don’t care where I play, I just want to play football.”

At this point Chris was reserved in naming any favorites but noted that the two in state programs are pretty high on his list. He has made several visits to each school, and is set for another one tomorrow to Alabama.

“I went to Auburn Saturday. It was good, met with the coaches and players, watched them scrimmage. I have been to Alabama twice already, and I am going back tomorrow. Alabama has a lot of tradition, they are a winning program. My father and uncle both played there. My uncle was the first black quarterback to play at Alabama.”

Chris took a few minutes to describe what he is looking for in a school as he continues to see his stock rise.

“I’m looking for good surroundings at a school. I want to be at a good place that will make me a better person. I am in no hurry to make a decision right now. I’m going to take my time and commit when it feel’s right. I’m probably going to take some official visits later this year. My cousin Reggie, my father, and my coach are all helping me through this process.”

Right now Chris named a few schools he was hearing from besides those that offered. He mentioned Florida State, UCLA, UAB, and Nebraska are all showing strong interest at this time. Tennessee was a bit of a surprise when they offered, and he was pretty willing to put them under consideration.

“Yeah coach Hinshaw offered me yesterday. I’m very interested in Tennessee and learning more about them. He was just telling me they think I’m a great athlete and they want to get me on campus to show me around. They weren’t sure if they liked me at running back or linebacker better. He was also telling me to try and keep an open mind.”

Last year Sweet Water advanced to the 3rd round of the playoffs before being knocked out. Chris shared some goals for himself and his team on the upcoming season.

“I want to give it all I’ve got on every play. The coaches tell me they like my strength and ability to run. They say I have good quickness and speed for my size. Right now I’m working on my footwork, and learning to read offenses better. Our only goal this year is to win state, we got so far last year, but this year we want to finish it.”
