Oxford, AL.- The 2012 recruiting threesome known as the “Oxford trio” has already made some national headlines. Two of the threesome will make a big trip to the University of Texas next week. Star defensive back Trae Elston will join linebacker Kwon Alexander on a trip next Wednesday to Austin. Very few out of state prospects earn early offers from Texas, but certainly the pair could make that exception. Elston gave us a quick update of his recruitment with the latest news.
“I’m headed over to Texas on Wednesday of next week. Me and Kwon (Alexander) are excited to go over. We want to see a lot of the school- school wise, the academics, they were talking about making a verbal offer, but we’ll see. So far I haven’t taken any other visits other than a camp. I play both ways in high school, and several schools are recruiting me both ways. Alabama and Florida State are recruiting me for receiver and defensive back. Most of the others are recruiting me as a defensive back.”
Already in the early stages of the recruiting process, Elston has been extended almost a dozen verbal offers.
“Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Texas Tech, and UCLA have all made verbal offers. I’d really like to play both sides if possible. I’d like to hear a little more from Tennessee or Georgia, Oregon, and more from Texas. My favorite school since growing up is Clemson. They are close to my hometown of Augusta, Georgia. I grew up going to games and watching them.”
Trae Elston and Kwon Alexander are both pretty close friends. The subject of playing together at the next level has come up often already. Not only would the two like to play, but they would love to play with the last trio Michael Flint. Not only would the Oxford trio like to play together, they have even talked with early 2011 commit Allan Carson about playing with him as well. Carson is currently committed to Tennessee.
“I am pretty close friends with Kwon. Allen Carson and the three of us all wanted to play together, but we’ll see. He has already been recruiting us to Tennessee quite a bit already.”
Every great recruiting story is different. Some recruits grow up knowing they want to play football, others are just amazing athletes that end up strapping on some pads. For Elston, it was somewhere in between.
“I started playing in the seventh grade. I tried out for football because they kept asking me to. Ever since then I’ve played both ways. The coaches all tell me they like how I play agressive, and that I make tackles. My closing speed is another strong attribute. I’m working on my zone coverage now, I’m great at run support, but now I want to get my pass coverage down.”
