KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Making a positive difference in the community is one of the core philosophies of the University of Tennessee football program. The student-athletes on the squad have exemplified their dedication in this area with the amount of time spent in the community during the 2012-13 academic year, with a total of 1,322 hours of community service performed by Tennessee football players.

The total of hours completed includes only two mandated events, and 1,217 of the hours were on a voluntary basis, or 92 percent.

“One of the pillars of our Vol for Life program is the goal of becoming champions in the community as well as in the classroom and on the field.” said head football coach Butch Jones. “When you examine the amount of volunteer hours the team has performed, it shows the caliber of the young men we have here at Tennessee to lead our program’s rise to the top.”

Senior Marlon Walls leads the team with his participation in 14 community service events during the past school year, a total of 33 hours. Another senior, James Stone, participated in 12 voluntary events, while senior Jacques Smith and redshirt freshman George Bullock participated 10.

Other noteworthy community service efforts from the team include senior Michael Palardy (9 events), seniors J.R. Carr and Raiques Crump and junior Allan Carson (8 events each), and senior Corey Miller (7 events).

Among the organizations benefiting from the Vols’ community service efforts in 2012-13 include Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley, Habitat for Humanity, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, Special Olympics, numerous local elementary, middle, and high schools, Read Across America, and Knox Area Rescue Missions.
