Gabe King still up in the air

in Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting

One name that has been in a lot of recruiting news lately is Gabe King, the ultra-athletic, highly rated defensive end from North Guilford High in Greensboro, NC. King and a few of his teammates took a trip out west this summer and he, Keenan Allen, Chris McCain, James Scales and 2011 WR prospect, Maurice Harris all fell in love with Oregon and Cal. They will all be visiting both of those PAC-10 schools again and all but Scales plan on taking a visit to Alabama as well.

Recruiting is the last thing on King’s mind right now as he is dealing with a number of other issues, including where he will play and attend school this year. He is awaiting a court ruling in regards to his having played out of district last year and as of now has had his eligibility revoked. If the court rules against King, he plans on making it work in his favor by attending a prep school in order to get some practice in and graduate early, at the end of December.

“Right now, it is up in the air. I am appealing the decision that went against me and I should know by the middle of the week (Sept 9th) whether or not I am good to go. I really just want to play ball and then worry about recruiting so I can plan the rest of my life.” When asked about recruiting, King said he has backed away from what people thought was him going to Cal over Oregon and Bama and now says they are still his top 3 but that he plans on taking his time and making all of his visits. One thing he did mention was the fact that he has been hearing a lot from one school, in fact way more than any other school he is looking at. That school? You guessed it. The University of Tennessee has been in contact with Gabe every day and he said it is paying off.

“I always liked their uniforms growing up and thought they were a great program so yes, I have followed them all my life.” What else does he like about the Vols? “I love the staff they have put together. Coach O and Coach Monte are as good as they come and anyone would benefit from heading out there to play ball.”

He mentioned that Cal still holds a slight lead over the other two but Tennessee has done enough to possibly warrant a visit. “Right now I don’t know. I don’t want to confuse an already tough situation but I can’t burn any bridges. If I decide I want to stay closer to home, Tennessee would be right there at the top.” That is not to say that UT is even close to that right now. In fact, they have a long ways to go, but they have made up a lot of ground at the same time. King is a high level talent who would benefit greatly from the type of defense the Vols are building and if they are able to secure a visit, who knows what might happen.

His teammate Chris McCain, a 4 star linebacker, committed to Oregon on Thursday. Oregon is the common school between the three stars, but they have no issue about all going there own separate ways. “I may end up at Cal, Chris at Oregon and Kee may go to Bama. Or we might all play together.”

Gabe favors Cal and Bama. It’s gonna come down to that. Kiffin better find a way to compete with Nick Saban in recruiting. So far he’s not even close.
