“Everything is going real good,” said Maggitt. “It’s really exciting and such a new experience. I’ve got like six or seven written offers and a couple verbal offers. The school that I have offers from is Tennessee, Florida, Miami, West Virginia, FIU, Iowa, and Iowa State. The most attention that I’m seeing right now is from Tennessee and Florida.”
All of the above schools offer something special. Maggitt explained what he will be looking for in particular with his college destination.
“Mostly history,” said Maggitt. “I’m also looking at things like graduation rates, success rates, the people that went there, and the program itself. I want to see all about the program. I want a big program. Another big thing is the bond that coaches have with their players. Tennessee seems like a good school.”
Even though it is extremely early, the Tennessee staff seems to be doing a wonderful job with Maggitt. He explained his early relationship with the Vols coaches.
“I really haven’t had any coaches calling me,” said Maggitt. “I haven’t really had any of their coaches calling me. I got the offer in the mail. I have been getting letters and handwritten mail from Lane Kiffin.”
Many recruiting fans may look at the weight of Maggitt, and wonder if he could hold up in big time SEC football. In the first game of his high school season, Maggitt showed his natural ability.
“We been doing okay,” said Maggitt. “We only got to play a half game during our spring game. Our team has been working hard and playing well together. We just lost to Glades Central, but it was like an upset. We should have really whooped them. We had a couple misplays and stuff that happens on the first game. Personally, I did pretty good. I had four sacks and two more tackles.”
Maggitt went into further detail discussing strengths and weaknesses of his game.
“My biggest strength is my ability to get to the ball,” said Maggitt. “I have a motor that just keeps going. My pass rushing skills is real good. My weakness right now is probably my run stopping.”
ESPN currently lists Maggitt as a defensive end, but weight may be a concern at the next level. He discussed the position that schools are recruiting him as.
“Yes, well most of the schools are offering me as a defensive end,” said Maggitt. “West Virginia runs a 3-3-5, and that usually means their ends are like 290 pounds. I’m thinking they probably want me at outside linebacker and walk up rush on the end. As long as I’m coming of the end, whether outside linebacker or end, the position in college doesn’t really matter.”
Even though the 2011 recruiting season has just begun, many recruits are taking advantage to their early offers. Maggitt described his timeline for a decision.
“I’m not really sure,” said Maggitt. “I know my coach, brother, and dad are going to be key in that. I think I will probably have a good school in mind by next spring. I will have a better idea after my spring game next year. Right now, I really don’t know.”
To conclude our conversation, Maggitt had some good news for Volunteer fans.
“It’s a good school,” said Maggitt. “Yea, I like to take a visit there.”
