Tennessee will get news sometime on Wednesday that they either landed junior college tight end Mychal Rivera (Santa Clarita, CA/College of the Canyons) or he choose to attend Kansas State instead.

Rivera visited Tennessee this past weekend and VolNation.com was able to briefly catch up with Rivera to discuss his upcoming choice.

“All I can say right now is that I visited Tennessee last week, it was a good visit, and that I am down to Kansas State and Tennessee,” says Rivera. “I can’t talk much right now but I will inform you tonight or tomorrow when I make my choice of where I am going.”

“I am down to Kansas State and Tennessee,” says Rivera.

Rivera is a junior college tight end who will have three years to play two once he chooses his college.

Before playing at College of the Canyons Rivera signed with Oregon out of Birmingham high school in Los Angles, CA. At Oregon he was expected to replace now departed senior Ed Dickson.

Coming out of high school Rivera had offers from Oregon, Nevada, San Diego State, and San Jose State.

As a sophomore at College of the Canyons Rivera had 32 catches for 316 yards, and three scores. He averaged 28.7 yards a game and 9.9 yards a catch.

River is currently 6’4 and 240 pounds and will be a more of a physical tight end at the next level.

At Tennessee the coaching staff now has a few coaches who have experience coaching the tight end position and most notably is head coach Derek Dooley and his background of coaching tight ends under current Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

ESPN.com Southwest blogger JC Schurburtt got a chance to catch up with Rivera as well and here is what Rivera said about the coaches at Tennessee.

“It’s crazy because it will be almost like three position coaches if I go there,” Rivera said. “The tight ends coach (Eric Russell) just came over from Texas Tech and is going to be the special teams coordinator, too. Then (offensive coordinator) Jim Chaney used to coach tight ends and has an NFL background and then the head coach (Derek Dooley) coached tight ends in the NFL and has coached them before.

Rivera plans to make his choice tonight and then announce tomorrow and when he does you can expect VolNation.com to be there with your latest information.
