University of Tennessee Director of Sports Medicine Jason McVeigh announced that senior defensive end Ben Martin underwent successful surgery to repair his right Achilles tendon on Wednesday, Feb. 17. The surgery was performed by Dr. Greg Mathien and Dr. Russell Betcher of the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Martin is expected to be available to participate as early as the opening game of the 2011 regular season.
A 6-3, 251-pound defensive end from Cincinnati, Ohio, Martin missed the 2010 season after suffering a left Achilles tendon injury in August, on the second day of fall practice. He has played in 33 games (11 starts) over three seasons from 2007-09, recording 63 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles.
