The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

Absolutely…don’t recall a year with so many P4 openings and hot MM names getting snagged, Alan Huss & Bucky McMillan are about the only 2 MM names left I can think of, and Bucky doesn’t really excite me much from a resume standpoint. Could play into doing the interim tag and getting first pick next cycle being the best option out there.

I do wonder since @Stoerner Fumbles said that DW likely has had a succession plan in place/discussed if there is an outside the box hire we aren’t even thinking about.

Could we see DW go the NBA assistant route like some of these schools have been doing more recently? Does DW have a double whammy of hiring a GM to go with the NBA assistant and really go all in on the fact that college basketball is becoming NBA-lite with the portal?

Seth Greenberg, famed for his deep and detailed analytical breakdowns of matchups, said on ESPN today that he expects Kentucky to win because all you have to do to stop Tennessee is “take out Lanier, take out Zeigler, and take out Gainey and Tennessee struggles to score.”

What incredible insight. So very easy to do, too. You just can’t let these guys score, and Kentucky will win.

After the second UK game, Seth went on a diatribe about how overrated The Vols are, clearly has an axe to grind, no surprise there

When I said succession plan, I meant that they’ve agreed on how they’d handle a CRB departure and how they’d go about replacing him. I do not think they have a specific coach in mind. I don’t think they could in this environment. Given the slate of openings and other coaches who’ve been hired, I’d personally prefer an assistant over what’s left. DW has specifically told big donors he doesn’t want to go that route, but I wouldn’t want to shop in this environment. The best option remains Rick returning, but even more so now.

It might be orange-tinted glasses, but I really believe Tennessee could get a guy like Otzelberger to come if Barnes were to step down.

I fully recognize that the last few rounds of hires at major schools before this season have been mid-major poaching or assistants, but the latter strikes me as trying in vain to keep it in the family and have a controlled environment. And the tides are changing this year, at least in my estimation.

I'm not saying Indiana and Texas are total parallels, largely since the former is a consensus historic power, but the reality of college sports' trajectory has to be setting in for guys coaching schools outside of the SEC and Big Ten. Maybe he'd rather hang on for the Wisconsin job, but it's incredibly clear that Tennessee has the resources to compete both in conference and nationally every year while every Big XII/ACC/Big East coach at a program without multiple titles has to be wondering what tomorrow holds since almost all of these schools just don't have the financial footing to fight the arms race.

What’s our NIL budget compared to Iowa State?

Not sure why those idiot coaches couldn't figure it out . "Stop their facilitators and scorers" is a great plan, and it was right in front of them all along. No idea why Seth isn't still in coaching.

Same. Give Gainey a chance. Low risk/high reward. And I really don't think it happens this year and don't even like talking about hypotheticals, but I'd be fine with that. Good chance of keeping things/people in place and not blowing it all up, so to speak. Give it a chance imo, but I don't think Barnes is retiring.

Also people keep saying the UK is a “bad” matchup for us however I believe we actually matchup fairly well despite the 2 earlier losses. They don’t possess a big man that can go 1-on-1 which has typically hurt us and yes, they can shoot it but if we would have just shot our percentages both games we would have won despite them shooting 50%. We need to put them in PNR repeatedly, especially when Butler sits.
They are clearly a bad match up for us

They are clearly a bad match up for us
The irony of the first two matchups with Kentucky is that they shot 50% from 3-pt range, and 50% FG percentage both times.

We shot 16% and 24% from 3-pt range in both matchups. The first matchup was when ZZ shot 11 3's which I highly doubt will happen again.

I also refuse to believe they'll go 50% from 3-pt range this time around, given the familiarity of the scout and team's defensive focus, especially with ZZ & Mashack fighting for that National Defensive Player of the Year award. I just hope the coaching staff tells the team not to help on any drive to the basket.

We shot 50% from 3-pt range against UCLA, a much better defensive team, so I'm hoping that can carry over with some rest. This isn't as bad of a matchup as people might think, in my opinion.
If we slow the tempo down and make this game miserable offensively for them, I think we have a better shot of winning.

Typically we shoot 45.5% FG and 34.5% 3PT
First game we went 11 of 45 from 3 for 24.4%... at 34.5% even rounding down that's 4 more 3s and 12 more points. We lost that game by 5
Second game we went 3 of 18 from 3 for 16.7%.... at 34.5% rounding would have meant 3 more 3s and 9 more points, we lost that game by 11

Kentucky typically shoots 48.1% FG and 37.4% 3PT
First game they went 12 of 24 from 3 for 50%... so if on average would have been 9 of 24 so that's 9 points more than normal...
Second game they went 12 of 24 from 3 for 50%... again would have been 9 of 24

So we shot our average we likely win both games...had they shot their average we likely win both games

Also the 2nd game at Rupp you know ZZ & Igor were both already dealing with stuff as both missed the very next game against Florida.

The 2 previous games we played them were both after away games and with short breaks.

at Auburn on Saturday then playing Kentucky on Tuesday
at Oklahoma on Saturday then playing at Kentucky on Tuesday

In short...this game has no excuses. Full 6 days from playing UCLA and everyone should be rested and ready to go. Neutral court.

Vols are winning this game, I just feel like this is one of those games where we are locked in, from the jump and our leaders refuse to let the Vols lose. Chaz is lighting it up and a win over UK in the Sweet 16 will be another chapter in ZZ and Mashack's book of Tennessee Basketball Legendary Feats , imo

You guys seen where Richard Patino has emerged as one of the front runners for Villanova.

Holy cow, has that program fallen so hard.

I remember when UT basketball sucked, Patino was always a potential candidate. Dark days

@Thunder Good-Oil , do you think Friday night, when the Vols beat the 'Cats, it's the biggest Vols victory over UK, in your lifetime ? I do (my lifetime, isn't as long as yours) just because it's win or go home, for the Elite 8

You didn't ask me, but it absolutely would be. I haven't been around Vol bball as long as Thunder (late 80's was when I got into it), but I couldn't imagine a bigger victory over those foos.

Probably. But the 5x Ernie and Bernie won were big. And even when Jerry finally got the win at Rupp in 1999. And I think when DeVoe won at Rupp in 1979 it was only their 2nd loss in that building and the first SEC loss there. And the 3rd one in 1979 that I’m hoping won’t be revenged 46 years later. There might have been one to clinch the SEC championship. There was a UT loss that allowed KY to tie for the SEC and steal the NCAAT invitation in the early 1970s IIRC.

I remember that 99 Rupp win. Brandon Wharton! I remember thinking to myself "Beating UK at Rupp days after winning a national championship in football. Is this Heaven?"

You don't think KY had a role in us shooting so poorly and them shooting so well both times in both games??? And, if you don't think we knew very well what KY was going to do given when we played them then I don't know what to say. Don't care about UCLA...b-ball is largely about match ups and we don't match up well with the KY players.

I think they are but it's a bit overblown. We could have won both games.
Agree...we def could have but we didn't. And, to be clear, I think we are playing better now on O than when we played them so we can clearly win this S16 game but I am worried. Our perimeter D doesn't seem to bother them at all (there's a reason their eff FG% was 62% in both games).and they can score in bunches so that is really a bad combo for us. We have to affect their shooting this game (Captain Obvious I know) and we have to score more than either of the previous 2 games imo.
