Who was the best PG you have ever seen play for Tennessee?

I’ll say CJ Watson. Guy played as a NBA point guard for a long time and started at UT from day 1. If he had played his whole career for Pearl instead of just one year, or if he had played for Rick Barnes, there’s no telling how good his career would have looked from an achievement standpoint. Plus he knocked out Joakim Noah and banged Floyd Mayweather’s baby mama, so you know he’s got some dog in him.

Chandler could have been the guy but left too soon. ZZ is an example of right guy, right time more so than being the greatest player to play point guard here. Maybe the greatest career of any UT point guard, but I don’t he was the greatest player to play point guard here. Bone was on his way but left too soon. Tony Harris and Bobby Maze had some successes here. Ramar Smith could have been a good one if he were not a psychopath. But I would go with CJ.

I’m 26 years old and the best 3 I can remember are ZZ, KC, Bone. I liked Bobby Maze too but he wasn’t quite as polished. I’m not considering JP Prince, Lamonte Turner, Chris Lofton, Kevin Punter etc because I view them as combo guards. Not true PG.

I'm 45 and it's ZZ in terms of just impact on the team at the collegiate level. Tennessee career leader in assists and steals. 11.3 ppg, 5.4 apg, 2.3 rpg, 1.8 spg as a 5'-8 PG with next to no offers coming out of high school.

2nd place is a debatable topic; Bone, Chandler, Watson, Tony Harris, but ZZ is tops, easily, for me.

You beat me to it. I go back to Tyrone Beamon, who was the PG while I was at UT. While he was not the most talented PG to ever play here, no one had more impact on the program as a whole and its growth, from relevance to a national power, than Zakai. The numbers, good as they are, don't even indicate the night to night impact he had on virtually every game he played here. The two SEC defensive player of the year awards reflect the amount of respect he earned around the conference.

Any the players you named are worthy of being in 2nd place and all were great players here, but 5'8" ZZ towers over them all.

From a pure offensive perspective, Bone was so much fun to watch becuase that team was so balanced and dynamic on offense.

I started watching the Vols when I came to UT and that was Buzz Peterson years. CJ Watson was a bright point.

Not the best UT PG, but underrated is Kevin Punter’s abbreviated senior year.

I think it’s wrong to chalk up ZZ’s accomplishments as a product of his circumstances, and in the same breath mention Ramar Smith and Bobby Maze. Jordan Bone comes close and he still had an incredibly balanced and dynamic cast. If you’re grading on a curve, then CJ gets a huge boost given the team he played w and what he did his last year.

can’t remember if he was the PG but Tony White was damn good on average teams. However he did have Doug Roth for a couple of seasons….

I think that Fred Jenkins was usually the PG when both were on the floor. But Fred missed a lot of games with injuries and Tony was the do everything guard. Not a true PG, but he was the PG for about half of his career.

I'm 27 years old, so I haven't seen the days of older film but my favorite PG was Jordan Bone.
I'm quite a bit older at 77, and I've seen some great Tennessee point guards but I'm gonna change this up a bit and say who was the best PG I've seen on any team. That would be Ernie DiGregorio who played for Providence from 1970-1973. He was a first rounder, 3rd overall pick, in 1973 and was rookie of the year in the NBA in 1974.

If you want to see what a great PG looks like, try to find some of his videos and be amazed at his ball handling skills. Didn't mean to hijack your thread but I've never seen anyone as good as Ernie
