I have two of his autographed football cards. Doug’s best friend’s (now deceased) wife gave them to me. Before his passing, Doug’s friend had some good stories back in the day @ UT.

One hell of an athlete. As a youngster, Dad( Class of 1949) and I (Class of 71)would go to watch Packers play Doug's Bears at Wrigley.
Packers had an all Pro O line and Doug was all over Bart. Sometimes literally triple teamed...was truly a force.
Great memories.

I never really understand why Doug doesn’t get more love. I mean the guy was so big and athletic I really feel like he could dominate in todays league

Recall hearing Bill Anderson tell the story of when Bears & Packers were playing a pre-season scrimmage; Doug (Bears) allowed Bill (Packers) to "block" him while other Packers were bulldozed all that day by Big Doug.

There is a story about him dismantling the inside of a "club" called the "Cotton Bowl" just outside of Henderson Tn. on the left as Hwy 45 heads to Jackson. Is said he hurt several people before he was calmed down. I was too young to have heard much about it in the early to mid fifties. But I do know that the building stayed "boarded-up" until sometime in the 60's.

When I was a child in Tennessee, the Knoxville News Sentinel posted a picture of Bobby Bringle doing chin-ups on Doug's extended arm during a football practice. I was also in the weight room art Tennessee in the 1957 when Doug and Jack Stroud walked into the room. The weight room was very small compared to todays weight rooms, and those to players almost took up half of the room. I met him in Atlanta when he lived there, but he was pretty much a loner and didn't want much publicity at that time. The football field was where he made his impressions.

There are very few former or current NFL players that other players will admit they were scared of him. There were a lot of players scared of Doug Atkins. In 1975, the AP voted Doug Atkins the SEC Player of the quarter century (1951-1975).

When Dick Evey reported to the Bears as a rookie, he was bragging about the size of his biceps and claimed that were 19 inches. One of the linebackers told him that he as nice but that was a couple of inches smaller that Doug’s forearms. Dick didn’t have a response.

To be able to let another human do chin-ups on your arm is next level freakish strength haha

I use to have coffee in the mornings in Humboldt when Doug came to town to visit his family...I attended his funeral. He was man. Believe me.

Addendum...Wrigley was freezing in the winter!!

Met Doug when I was 12-13 years old. I could put two fingers—and I have larger hands and fingers—into his size 19 championship ring with ease. He was a massive individual and one helluva football player.
