2 years ago the FF was staring UT right in the face and lost to FAU. IMO, this year there wasn't that much difference in the top 8 seeds. UT just started too slow today.Would be nice if we didn't have to play the #1 seed in the Elite 8 for once.
Who knows when the next opportunity we will get in this situation. It may not be for another 20 years. The good news is with the NIL structure, you are only ever a year away from turning a bad year to a good year. Just gotta evaluate talent in the portal well, which we have had some fortune with.
So this loss falls squarely on the weasel John Pennington! They were actually talking on SportsSource today about how we might have put such an emphasis on the Kentucky game that it may be difficult to come out with the same fire against Houston.
After the first half of todays game, I tend to agree with that because we looked very timid. The game was over in the first half. When we decided to get mean it was too late.
Getting screwed over by the refs in the SECT really killed our chance this year.
instead of getting that cakewalk bracket the lizards got (and got exposed in), we had to face a gauntlet with kentucky, houston).
If we had that #1 seed in the west bracket we would've broken through. But the refs screwed us out the SECT and the better team got the worse seed and bracket.

The game was over at the 10-minute mark when Barnes called the shell shock timeout. They went to the wrong corner. How do you go 0-14? They could hit at least two blindfolded. It's hard to miss 14 straight shots. They were actually talking on SportsSource today about how we might have put such an emphasis on the Kentucky game that it may be difficult to come out with the same fire against Houston.

Just stating facts, but the two years that we had nice draws, we had injuries. ZZ was out 2 years ago. Kyle Alexander got hurt in game one in 2018. While Kyle wasn’t dominant, he was a key defender/contributor that would have helped against Loyola Chicago’s big man.2 years ago the FF was staring UT right in the face and lost to FAU. I wasn't surprised we lost....It's pretty much what Tennessee basketball does come tournament time. It's in our DNA. And doing so after having a good game against KY is also in our DNA. I was shocked however on getting completely blown out.It was the most Tennessee thing ever to have such a complete no show. Losing to a very good Houston team isn’t that surprising. They were favored for a reason. However, losing in such a non-competitive fashion is.
The whole “we just emptied the tank on Kentucky” thing isn’t completely without merit, but come on. That first half was embarrassingly bad - so much so that it almost erases the great stuff that led up to our team getting to the Elite 8. What will be the memory and the headline be? “Vols lay massive egg with a Final Four on the line.” Same old story.
All that said, I try to keep things in perspective. Back to back Elite 8 appearances ain’t too shabby for a basketball program that is historically not upper tier (to put it kindly). I, for one, am thankful for this team and Coach Barnes. I remember the bad old days.
