I think a part of cheering for the SEC is simply because somehow most of the commentators come from different conferences, and honestly I can't stay to hear Holtz slobber about ND and Mark May about pretty much everyone but SEC (those are only two of many)...
I will cheer for the SEC because I think it's the hardest conference in the country, and I think we deserve respect...I think it does help us along the way as well, because while other conferences are stacked with mediocrity, we have very view lower tier teams.
Anywho - just my $.02
That's just the thing, WE, as in Tennessee, aren't getting the respect. OUR RIVALS ARE. No one cares what conference the National Champion is in. All that matters is that they won and that means they have the respect and they get the recruits. Period. This reasoning is ridiculous. I will never understand why anyone roots for a rival and somehow thinks by them winning it makes us look good.
Why would you pull for any other SEC team?!! Do you think Alabama winning the NC reflects well on us? No! They are the ones that will have the trophy in their case, not us. Do you think USC fans, Oregon fans, etc say "ooh, Tennessee is in the SEC and since Alabama won the NC and they are too, Tennessee must be a good team. Um, no. Not to mention the recruiting edge it gives Bama against us when they can flash that NC ring to any and all recruits that we are fighting for. Going for them is just plain stupid, not to mention traitorous. We hate Bama and we don't cheer for them under any circumstances if you are a real fan.
Because it helps in the long run with the preception of our conference. Strong conference means the recruits want to play in the SEC; the schedules are considered tougher; and money from sponsors, TV, and bowls flow more.
If Boise State or other schools in that conference were to win the NC title every year, all teams in the SEC would suffer. Just as when the SEC continues to win NC titles; teams in other conferences suffer.
I don't think it matters anymore. SEC is king and has been for some time. If bama loses the NC i don't think the SEC loses any respect.
