Vols are not underachieving

Our fans like to say our team is underachieving this year. Truth is, there is no such thing as "underachieving" or "overachieving." You simply achieve or you don't. You are who you are. The fact that we are losing more games than people think we should is due to the fact that we don't have that much talent and are not that good to begin with. If we had Pearl, we might win two extra games, but let's not kid ourselves into believing we would be anything more than a bubble team. Bottom line: we are not a basketball school and never will be. We have never been very good. Making the tournament does not mean you are a good team. Consistently making the Sweet 16 means you are a good team. Unfortunately that's not gonna happen anytime soon. So my advice is to save your energy Vol fans and focus on football and hope we can win five games next year.

But regarding the basketball team, I think performance measures are based on expectations. So far, the team is performing under that. That doesn't mean they can't get hot, and exceed expectations and make a run.

However, after watching the UF game the other night, you can see that UT doesn't have that extra gear that UF does. With about 6 mins to go you could see UF tighten the clamps on D and make a couple of clutch 3's to put the game away. UT hasn't shown they can do that against a quality team.

Pearl took a bunch of guys that I didn't even think were SEC caliber and won over 20 games with them in his first year and this team is way more talented than that. If Pearl were coaching this team they'd be worried about seeding, not getting into the tourney.

Truth is this team is very experienced, talented and they are severely underachieving. This team should not be a bubble team.

What he said! There are definitely over/under achievers as individuals as and teams. I look back and Aaron Green & Jenis Grindstaff. Those 2 had little talent but you got every ounce they had every game. Then you have a player I loved and made me sick at the same time Scotty Hopson who's talent was NBA level but effort was not there alot of the time.

This coach sucks and so does his staff. Not only is this team underachieving but it's criminally doing so. If you don't want to admit that and want to throw out a bunch of excuses, well, then, you are welcome to join a small but vocal minority of Martin sunshine pumpers.

Thanks, Yoda, for the 'there is no try' thread, but this team has underperformed no matter what philosophy you want to use to justify it.

That's why most of us want Pearl back because we made the sweet 16 regularly with him and he did make us a top 15 school.

I might have to agree with the wisdom that says we're not a top 25 team.
With a roster clearly better than at least 4 teams in the top 25, we shouldn't be.
Even if we were sitting here with a 20-4 record like we should be, I can see no way we'd be ranked.
All these teams with 19-5 and 19-6 records deserve to be there. Not us. we're Tennessee.
