The Vols were No. 16 in the Rivals.com team rankings Thursday night, and No. 12 on the Scout.com list. Several of their commitments are listed as “soft,” but they’re also hosting several nearly 20 highly regarded players this weekend.

“I think we’re in a lot of people’s top three,” Lane Kiffin said. “We’ll see how we close here. But once again, to be that far behind, it’s hard for a kid and a family to make a decision when they’ve known the guys you’re going up against for two years and they’ve known your staff for two weeks.”

Not sure what list you looked at, I believe Scout has us 18th...

Until 4 and 5 star " Big Nasty's " are inked on a regular basis not much changes when SEC Champions are crowned.

Kiffin wasn't saying that people have us as finishing with a Top 3 class. He was saying that we are in a lot of recruit's Top 3 schools of interest and have a good shot with them.

Maybe so, but I am looking at it 'right now'. It does say at the bottom:

"* Rankings as of 1/31/2009 12:00 PM ET; Previous Rankings as of 1/31/2009 11:00 AM ET"

I'm not trying to pick a fight. All I'm trying to say is, with the way some people go off the deep end when 'info' gets posted on here, be careful about posting inaccurate info.

i have optimism for NSD but i won't hold it against CLK and staff if we can't manage to get these top kids. Like he said in his article, these kids and their families have known the other staffs for a a lot longer and that's hard to make up that much ground in a couple of months. I am really excited about next years class.

Can we get the thread heading changed to reflect what Kiffin was actually saying?

It sounds to me like Kiffin is either making excuses or lowering expectations.

I do not think we could possiblity have had any expectations. I have no idea what excuses he could make when I feel he has already met reasonable expections by filling out a staff and getting into the top three of players that weren't even giving us a fifth look a month ago.

So what are the expectations. Top 5 class is overreaching in expectations and a top 10 class would be very high at this point. I would think that if we land 15th or better he will exceed expectations.

22-16 would be reasonable.

Bottom line its all a paper drill anyway and its what you do with what you got is all that really matters. He has identified his needs and we will see what the season holds for us. Next Years class and its recruitment is where we can set realistic expectations.

Still think there is some house cleaning in store for current players.

Mike Hamilton forced Kiffin to honor the scholarships from the former staff. Kiffin did not see some of them in the mold he was recruiting and told them they would honor the offers but that they really didn't fit his team. Now we have all these armchair coaches ripping Kiffin for not taking Boyd, Petty and Thigpen. If the players he let go do well at other teams good for them, but they didn't fit the direction we are going. Stop the belly aching and the Kiffin is running off the recruits BS. Blame Hambone for making him honor those recruits that was not on his radar for recruits to begin with.

Well said and agree. This is not buisness as usual thank God. We have the second best if not the best recruiting staff in the Nation starting with less than a month to go into the recruiting season and doing well. People will find a reason to belly ache regardless. CLK will get what he wants and needs to finish out this Class.
