VQ said that about a week-10 days before his commitment JHS called and said that Indiana was telling him he’d be the starting PG, he wanted to know if Tennessee would do the same…Barnes told him not only was he not assured a starting spot but he wouldn’t even promise him he’d play PG here.

Or that is being leaked to save face. I’m not buying that.

Why would Rick Barnes or his program ever need to save face?

Because coaches have egos. Why did Kentucky start leaking that BHH was lazy and “didn’t fit their culture” when it was obvious he wasn’t going there? They get 5* players all the time. Or like when Paolo Banchero decided to go to Duke and everyone in their brother here said it’s because Duke paid him? People don’t want to admit they were passed over.

Is there a clear cut, no doubt about it case of Rick Barnes ever doing that?

Also Barnes might not have specifically told Kennedy Chandler “I promise you that you will be the starting PG from day one” but I’m sure it was heavily implied to Kennedy and his family he’d be a starter lol

Innocent til proved guilty. If you make the charge, it's up to you to prove it, not up to others to disprove it.

I’m just a poster on a message board that stated an opinion. This isn’t a court a law. I’d maybe take it up with VQ, the people who originally gave the report and are an actual media organization, to have some concrete evidence that what they are saying actually happened.

Given the make-up of his team and who it was known he was recruiting, he didn't have to say a thing about it. And Chandler is still not promised to start. He has to earn it.

You’re probably right but the other top schools in his recruitment like Duke, Kentucky, etc almost certainly did the same. That’s a little different than the Tennessee/Nebraska football of the college basketball borderline guaranteeing a spot to a fringe top 50 player.

Zion says hi.

Circumstances though. Not a good argument. We had no real difference maker at PG when recruiting Chandler. We have Chandler and already committed Edwards, and this staff probably doesn't view JHS as their PG. Common sense.

Oh most definitely. I’m not arguing that JHS and Chandler are the same prospect nor am I saying Barnes should have promised JHS a spot if that is what occurred. I’m just doubting the story

That isn’t my criticism. My criticism is people who blindly assume Barnes just tells every recruit the same thing about “earn” or has them at the same starting point or that Barnes doesn’t promise PT. It would be stupid to operate that way.

You do the opposite of them, so it's fair game.

I am also not sure how it's not your criticism because you brought Chandler into it. The circumstances absolutely matter in this.

You’re not understanding my position. My criticism is for people that are criticizing JHS for wanting a spot and not wanting him because of the alleged situation (and assuming this is true) and saying “don’t want” or people that think Barnes doesn’t ever promise PT because he’s a straight shooter or something like that.

I’d say the more likely scenario is that Indiana offered JHS a chance to be a PG first and foremost and then Tennessee told him they saw him as a wing player and he went with Indiana. I have a hard time seeing Mike Woodson (a 30 year NBA coaching vet) promising a kid a starting spot to a 17 year old 4*…or hell even anyone

This. The irony is palpable in that some are being defensive with others questioning Barnes's motives while in the same breath projecting the motives of other coaches. Seems like the "innocent until proven guilty" concept only goes in one direction for some.

If someone needed/was worried about saving face that would make more sense…but not a surprise you don’t believe it. His quotes to Indiana’s sites after committing sure do say “point guard” a lot.

That was fans, not VQ or 247 or any other reputable site.

Well given the roster makeup it was also probably assumed by Chandler and his family lol

Tbf about Banchero, I don’t recall it being leaked form VQ or any other source where you’d think it was coming from the coaches that Duke cheated to land him. That was just the assumption on this board because it seemed like we had some momentum with him, did not seem like Duke did, his commitment came out of nowhere, and it’s Duke. Whether or not you think the allegation is true, no indication that I remember that it came from a coach trying to save face
Edit: looks like BTO beat me to the punch^

I think you, I, and Chandler all watched, last year, and knew that was the case. No implication needed.
