Alright then

Weird?

These kids think stuff like listing TSU is cool. So Bama must lead. I moved my nephew in TSU a few weeks ago and the older dorms look like the slums. I'm sure most places look aged but theirs look really aged. They are building a new building though.

Wow, that’s…something.

I’m far from a Barnes basher, but recruiting over these past few weeks has been one big kick in the nuts.
Similar happened last year with Ingram, Banchero and Smith….we had just Chandler. This year we have Edwards, I’ll wait to panic too much.

Probably because Barnes is honest with most recruits.

He doesn’t make promises nor tell them that they’ll see the floor immediately.

That’s not a knock on him considering he’s very old school.

Barnes has given us these expectations. He is the best recruiter in our basketball history.

I would question that some. Mears signed guys that would be 5 star/high 4 star today like Spencer Haywood, Mike Edwards, Grunfeld, King, & Reggie Johnson. He was close on many others but recruiting was very different then.

Pearl had 5 star guys also.

My working theory for this class:

Like some mentioned, it’s similar to when we missed on Paolo Banchero, Harrison Ingram and Jabari Smith when Barnes went REAL BIG and just narrowly missed on a historic class. I can’t remember which of those guys talked about it, but had the pandemic not happened, that group was allegedly coming here.

Okay — whatever. What I’m getting at is that’s why we’ve seen Barnes take these recent guys who reclassified.

I think the staff is just playing their contingency plan card early. The coaches have a pretty good feeling that most of their top targets are going elsewhere, and so they’re stocking the cupboard now while the getting is good.

I don’t think there’s a huge reason to be worried about scholarship allocation anymore, as the transfer rule has basically made it a pretty solid bet that at least a few spots will open up after each season.

Idk — just something I’ve been pondering on as all this unfolds.

Mears was before my time, but Barnes’ recruiting is better than Pearl. Pearl had 2 guys in the top 10 (Hopson and Harris), and 2 others in the top 25 (Smith and Crews), who never made it past year one. Barnes has recruited 5 top 25 players with 2 being first round draft picks. We are also involved in many more high level guys than Pearl really was. That’s JMO.

Smith & Crews both played more than 1 year.

Barnes is getting a different type of 5 star than Pearl. Barnes is getting 5-stars that do not have question marks. Pearl was able to get Ramar and Crews because they were paper 5-stars that the elite schools did not seriously pursue. Harris was his one big win in recruiting. Hopson I guess would be too. Although there was some scuttle that some elite schools were not pursuing him as hard as some others because of questions about his work ethic.

Aidoo doesnt appear ready to play (hence the reason they added the Knox Catholic kid late) and we havent seen BHH yet. 6 years and we've had Grant, Fulky and Alexander thus far......
Lol. If you’re citing the addition of Tamba as being a late pickup because Aidoo isn’t ready….that tells us all we need to know about how closely you follow Vols b-ball recruiting. :)
