Tennessee soccer took advantage of an own goal and a strike from Sammi Woods to defeat Chattanooga, 2-0.

The Lady Vols (1-1-0) earned their first win of the season in Sunday’s home opener at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Tennessee’s offense generated 19 shots in the win but only put five on target. It wasn’t until the Mocs (0-1-1) deflected a cross into their own goal that the Lady Vols took the lead. Sammi Woods added a second goal to seal the win in the final minute.

Here are some takeaways from the win.

Tennessee fails to convert first-half chances

The Lady Vols took advantage of having 65% of the ball in the first half, generating 10 shots. Most of the first half was played in Tennessee’s attacking third as Chattanooga was constantly under pressure.

However, Tennessee only put three shots on target with all three being saved. Even more chances were shut down by the Mocs inside the box. Despite the early attacking threats, the Lady Vols went into halftime scoreless.

Own goal puts Lady Vols ahead

The Lady Vol attack built its way into the second half, trying to break through Chattanooga’s defense. In the 64th minute, Muriel Kroflin’s cross was deflected in by a Chattanooga defender, giving Tennessee the lead.

With 14 seconds left, Woods fired a strike from distance to give Tennessee its first goal it scored itself this season.

New players continue to gel

After a strong first performance in Bloomington, Sammi Woods put in another good performance on Sunday. The Michigan transfer recorded five shots and a goal as she led Tennessee’s attack from the right side. Alongside her, Reese Mattern put two shots on target in her second college game.

Sarah Bridenstine continued her Tennessee career with a good performance in midfield, playing 71 minutes. Freshman Nyla Blue played in her first career game in Sunday’s home opener, while Kroflin played her first game for the Lady Vols after transferring from Oklahoma.

Up next

Tennessee travels to take on ETSU on Thursday, trying to earn a first road win of the season. The Lady Vols return to Regal Soccer Stadium next Sunday to face Lipscomb.

Defense good, offense very much a work in progress. Woods, Mattern, and Blue look like players. Blue needs more time as does Runyon. Jaida is at this point a shell of her former self. Maybe she gets better as the year progresses, injuries have killed her game. One thing I liked is Woods called for the ball and was ready to hit it when it came.
