⚽️Lady Vols Soccer Thread

An excellent game by Romig--but it's obviously not a good sign when your keeper has to make that many good saves. If I were Kirt, I'd be switching this team back to the 4-4-2 that we played last year, but we'll see if he makes any changes.

I had a post on all the crazy results in the SEC last night--a few upsets, for sure--but I think the posting of the Romig video zapped my post just as I was hitting the post button! And I don't feel like rewriting it. Long story short, a lot of teams that have been bottom half of the conference or worse in recent years--Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi State--beat teams that have been consistently upper-half--Arkansas lost, Auburn lost, Texas A&M lost. We saw what Florida--picked to finish last in the conference--nearly did to us. And Kentucky, which has been bad the last 3 years, played more than respectably again Ole Miss, but lost, 2-1. As Arkansas coach Colby Hale said, "The SEC is a different animal." By that he meant, that it is physical and athletic and that you'd better to be ready to play--in every game. If you have the better talent, or play the better game, you'd better put the ball in the net. Texas A&M was much better than Georgia but could only manage 2 goals (hit a post, hit a crossbar, two balls cleared off goal-line by Georgia) whereas Georgia had only 3 shots on goal but scored on all three and won the game.

The bama game is HUGE for us, but we have to play a lot better. Have to play much better defense and have to be better in the attacking third. We get the ball into the attacking third a lot--but we aren't scoring enough. Not finishing some good chances, and our forwards too often try to dribble through defenders or muscle past a double-team when finding an open teammate and passing the ball would be better.

Shaw won UT a lot of games by heading in corner kicks. Yes, being 5'11 helps.

Now, we are close to terrible on converting corner kicks. We just don't seem to have players who can find the ball, jump and head it. A real struggle.

VFL Cariel Ellis scored another goal and had another assist for undefeated Lamar today.

That makes 5 goals and 3 assists for the season for the former Vol.

Wish she had stayed in Knoxville, been playing great.

VFL Caryln Baldwin recently terminated her contract with Benfica and is now playing for S.F. Damaiense

Yanez, in addition to be an outstanding keeper, had a real take-charge personality: she was vocal during games and good at getting the players
in the back organized and focused. I've never seen much of that from Romig--but if she plays as well as she did last game, no worries. Actually,
we don't want to be so dependent on any keeper making that many saves. Not good.

We do not have a quality win yet this year. I continue to feel uneasy about Kirt and this team simply because we aren't the team we were last year--and we should be, at the least, and he's done nothing apparent to change things. We need to show out and play tough and win on Thursday.

Romig Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Romig was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league's office on Monday.

The recognition comes on the heels of a career night at Florida last Friday in which she logged a career-high nine saves in UT's 2-1 win in its SEC opener. The Gators put 10 shots on goal, five of which came in the final 25 minutes of the match. Romig commanded the defense throughout the game, denying six shots taken from inside the 18-yard box to help UT improve to 1-0 in conference play.

The Lady Vols have posted a 5-1 record over the six games in which Romig has been active this season, shutting out four of its last five opponents. She has made 17 saves on the season and holds a save percentage of .810.

Romig currently sits at third all-time in the Tennessee record book with a save percentage of .802, and her career goals against average of .940 ranks fourth. She is seventh all-time in career saves with 191 and ties Shae Yanez at third in most career shutouts (21).

It is Romig's first SEC weekly honor of this season and her third overall, having previously been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice during the 2020-21 season.

Tennessee continues SEC play on Thursday, hosting No. 11 Alabama in a 6 p.m. ET contest at Regal Stadium. The game will be streamed on SECN+.

Tennessee faces Alabama and Felicia Knox Thursday.

M Felicia Knox, Alabama - The Crimson Tide rolled past South Carolina Thursday night. And Knox was central to that effort, scoring and providing an assist in a 2-0 win. She assisted another goal Sunday against Chattanooga(w).

Wow: our RPI is worse than I expected. Kirt has to figure out how to get us playing better---starting now. I will be very interested to see if any changes are made for the bama game, which is a must-win contest, or if just rolls out the same personnel in the same new system again. We need this game badly.
