⚽️Lady Vols Soccer Thread

First regular-season Vol game tomorrow. If I'm Kirt, I'm emailing the sports editor of the Daily Beacon and whoever runs UTSports.com
and asking why there's been virtually no coverage of the soccer team. Hard to build up student/fan support and attendance at games
when there is practically zero coverage.

I'll be curious, as always, to see who is starting tomorrow. Is Kirt going to start a couple of veteran "leaders" who aren't very good players?
That seems a strong possibility. I sincerely hope that at the end of this season, I'm heaping praise on Kirt for his astute personnel and tactical decisions and not ranting---again--that he's "over his head" (see Warlick) and has "no freaking idea what he's doing"---but
the latter remains a strong possibility.

It’s an exhibition match

Right, sorry! Missed that. Still, my comment about the lack of publicity holds. Exhibitions or not, the season
has started. Hasn't stopped UTSports.com and the Beacon from elephant-gun coverage of football and
even basketball.

Going all in on Sweden just defeated the team most likely favored to win it all....

Sweden is really good. They are not just a set piece team, they can move the ball with real skill. I am a little salty since they just busted my bracket but I still don't favor them over France (who I expect to defeat Australia). With Renard, the Swedes won't have their usual advantage in the air and France is loaded with attacking talent.

The non-revenue coaches should be /demanding/ more coverage from UTSports.com and the Beacon--and the coaches should make themselves and their players available for interviews before and during the season. You've got to rattle chains or it will just be football coverage 24/7, followed by basketball, with a few media scraps for everybody else. You're not going to build fan support if you don't work at it. College sports coverage--especially by the college itself, but local media as well--tends to be very superficial and mostly public relations, but that's better than nothing. The non-rev coaches should be demanding more and better coverage.

With all due respect I try to follow all sports but Football and Basketball will always be top priority media wise at most every school that's just the way it is...

I'm not suggesting that football and basketball shouldn't get top billing. I"m suggesting simply that space be carved out for more coverage of non-revenue sports, which is negligible, and perhaps the only way that's going to happen is if the coaches starting rattling chains. We don't need hours of football practice coverage /every day/ in August and zero coverage of soccer, volleyball, tennis, swimming, rowing.

MATCH CENTRAL: Tennessee vs. Jacksonville State (exhibition)

The Lady Vols will host Jacksonville State in their final preseason tuneup on Saturday, kicking off at 2 p.m. ET in Regal Stadium.

In its first exhibition outing, UT came from two goals down against #7 Alabama to draw 2-2. Graduate transfer Samantha Agresti and redshirt-sophomore Jenna Stayart were the goal scorers for UT. Redshirt-sophomore Ally Zazzara and redshirt-freshman Abby Reisz split time in the net, combining for three saves on the night. Tennessee kept the pressure on offensively, outshooting the Crimson Tide 16-7 and taking 11 corners to UA's four.

Admission is free for all preseason and regular-season soccer matches. For fans planning to attend, note that Tennessee's clear bag policy will be in effect again this season.

VS THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE: This will be the first-ever meeting between UT and Jacksonville State. Tennessee owns an all-time record of 8-1-0 against OVC teams with its sole loss coming against Southeast Missouri in 2016.

NEW FACES: Tennessee added 10 newcomers in its 2023 signing class. All 10 are versatile field players with six enrolling as freshmen and four arriving as transfers with multiple years of collegiate experience.

BACK AGAIN: The Lady Vols return five starters and 20 letterwinners from the 2022 team that clinched an SEC East Division title for the third straight season.

SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS: Jacksonville State added 14 newcomers to the program in 2023 and returned 14 from the 2022 squad that finished 3-13-2 overall and 1-7-2 in the OVC.

UP NEXT: UT will host the University of California in its home opener at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 17.
