1,000 Yard Rusher Watch/Countdown

Great info . . . it puts our running game into perspective, of course some nega-vols will say that the numbers are padded due to three "cupcakes" that we've played. But another factor with Neal is that he is not a "natural" running back, he was a wide receiver if I'm not mistaken that was converted to RB. He has developed into a nice back, not GREAT but very adequate . . .

Lastly, Neal's numbers could climb a bit higher if the passing game can grow into an average performance of 250 plus yards per game; forcing defenses to respect the pass and not load the line of scrimmage.

GO VOLS!

negavols...:machgun::machgun: they don't realize almost every stat in college football is effected because a team played at least one patsy in a given year. It's just the way it is.

Besides they need us....we help pay for their upgrade in facilities, good coaches, etc.

1,655 for the career. Also he's 11th in carries in FBS.

According to my count, since 1950 UT has had 12 individual rushing efforts against UGA that eclipsed 100 yards. Rajion has 2 of them, and this years was 5th best.

That really puts it in perspective. It is dam hard to run the ball in the SEC.

When you can, you win championships.

The 1998 Vols ran for 4.9 per carry. I think if we can continue to get play calling like we got yesterday, especially with the hand offs to Pig out of the slot we have a very good chance to better that.

This, as much as anything has me pumped up about where this coaching staff is taking us.

Some will say our O-line is the reason, but they have never been heralded as great run blockers. Next year will tell the tale, though.

When is the last time Tennessee averaged more than 5.4 yards per carry for the season? Anyone know?

Travis Stevens rushed for 1,464 in 2001, I'm not sure what his or the team average per carry was that year, but that was an awesome offense that year at UT.

UT record is 5.9 in 1993. The 5.4 would be the best since 1993. I glanced at the other seasons, and there were maybe 2-3 over 5.0 ypc, one being 5.75 in 1951.

Notable recent years:

2012 4.7 ypc.

2009 4.3 ypc (with Hardesty having 1300+).

2004 4.7 ypc (2 1,000 yard rushers).

2001 4.08 ypc (Stephens 1400+).

Thanks for these stats! Only 5 1,000 yard rushers in last 10 years and 2 were in 2004. I think that speaks for itself when you look at our record over that period.

Hey OP, just a suggestion (SIAP) maybe list out UT's rushing yards vs opponent next to opponents average allowed rushing yds per game, to see how we stacked up against each foe.

Will do. I just updated the rushing ranks, so I'll add that in too.

Edit: updated. On average we are getting 50+ more yards than our opponents normally allow. Florida was the only drop off versus the stats, but their run D has been hurt by injuries.

I think we get over 200 on the Gamecocks. And we will need every inch of that to get the win.

This should be a rather simple trivia question for any hardcore Tennessee football fan: What Tennessee team holds the single-season record for yards rushing, as well as single-game records for most yards rushing and touchdowns rushing?

Tre Mason rushed for over 1000 last yr but his team sucked. looks like thats where this neal thing may go. 1000 yard rusher but a 4 win team. who cares.

So this post gets a vote for dumbest post of the year. If you don't care then why take the time to post? Next time you have a thought, just let it go.

Been impressed with Neal lately. Not the most "natural" runner but he has come a long way since making the switch to RB. Stepped up big time the past two games. Getting Lane back will keep Neal fresher. I think Neal continues to get more carries because of his recent performances. Have to go with the back thats hot right now.

LOL. I'll bet my house, literally, that we win more than 4. Care to take me up on it?

I will guess 1990 without looking.

Great info. Also, I think the rushing yards for the Florida game were somewhat low due to the Peterman experiment for 1/2 the game. I wonder what the numbers would have been if Worley was in the whole game, and was able to do handle the reads better on runs.

Yeah, I like to track these stats also. When we played UF, they were allowing about 50 ypg and we got 66. Only a slight improvement but our rush attempts were low also. It helps to look at yards per carry for the gator D:

Toledo 3.1
Miami 1.8
Vols 2.9
UK 2.3
Ark 3.8
LSU 4.5

Easley got injured against UK and the totals improved for Ark and LSU, although both are pretty good running the ball also. Our total might have been higher had we not been forced to pass on almost every play in the second half. :banghead2:

Excellent guess, although 1989 was the year of the Cobb-Webb tandem. That squad certainly was one of our most productive rushing teams, with 582 carries for 2701 yards and 27 touchdowns on the ground. HINT: much earlier.

1951 team? I know they rushed for over 300 yards a game.

Neal looked a lot faster in the Georgia game, especially on that 4th-down play where he picked up 40-something yards. I've heard he's one of the fastest players on the team, but last week was the first time I really noticed his speed.

He definitely deserves to be in the 1000-yard club.

Correct. They were the only Tennessee team to average more than 300 YPG rushing and the only Tennessee eleven to rush for more than 3,000 yards, all in only ten regular season games. The 1951 team ran the ball 533 times for 3068 yards and 40 tds. The 1950 team was almost as prolific on the ground, compiling 2710 yards and 31 tds rushing. A strong ground game and tough defense were a formula for championship success back then, just as they were in 1998.
