1 In 4 Americans Thinks The Sun Goes Around The Earth,

Answers might correlate to the ones thinking the Earth is 6000 years old.

A few years ago I made an offhand comment on here about the 6000 year old Earth and ended up arguing all weekend about it. The outright hostility some people have towards science is amazing.

If the 2,000 people were randomly selected the results are fairly close to those if you sample 100% of the population.

2200 people out of 300,000,000.

Ummm no.
Well maybe if they all lived in Chicago.

The AIDS virus mutates everyday to the cocktail of pills that people take. That's friggin evolution. The only reason it's still a theory is to not make a bunch of baffoons unhappy.

That's not how statistical systems work. There is not much difference statistically in sampling 10,000 people vs 1,000,000,000 people

If its a Simple Random Survey, this is very correct. The people they used must of stratified also. It means they come from all populations.

A virus mutating doesn't prove or disprove that we evolved from chimps. That's why it's called the theory of evolution.

Wow.

Was that a serious argument? I once saw one of those Willy Wonka memes that said "Oh, evolution isn't real? Tell me again how we have Chinese and black people"

......... I put this little gem of an argument somewhere in that same category.

It proves that there is a force out there guiding change. We didn't evolve from chimps. We have a common ancestor with them. Those are two very different opinions. Chimps and us took two different directions. I think people misinterpret the theory because of religious ignorance. It all boils down to politics again.

Please consider the fact that the Catolic church still holds power as well. Churches have the power to change culture, and its a huge power.

Where is the fossilized evidence of such an ancestor? If this ancestor was around for thousands of years wouldn't there thousands upon thousands of fossilized records? There have been a few teeth and a leg bone or two but not enough to prove a theory.

They're all in Europe. There are full bodied skeletons from the beginning of human existence. Most of them have primate features. You'd be able to see it in a anthropology textbook. What's wrong in saying our cousin species and us have a common link?

I'd say its personal opinion. A person who refuses to consider the information laid out in front of them is a buffoon to me. Like the one in four who think the sun goes around the earth.

Nothing if it did exists but I have yet to see proof that they do. One of the problems is they find a piece here and a piece there and they combine all the pieces to form one whole. There is a lot differences from skeleton to skeleton of each person, not to mention between different races. Then there is also the problem of fossils being faked or forged which has happened before. Not saying those ones are but it has happened.

Depends on where and how they did the sampling - it can be tough to be random with a smaller sample size. If it's just a numbers game, you could apply the conclusion to the whole world.

Speaking of that, how does this "conclusion" stack up against the other populations of the world? The reaction is that Americans are dumb, but they may not be that far off from other world populations.

FWIW.

There have been digs around the cradle of life going on the last fourty years. All kinds of forms have came up. It's not like were all that different genetically either. Look at those pictures of presidents vs. chimps. Both George and Barry look like monkeys.

Not sure if you're serious but just because someone looks like a monkey or chimp proves nothing at all. My grandad looked just like his dog guess they are descendants to huh?

And genetically speaking everything on earth is pretty much the same.

Gee, I wonder why? If we go way back 4 billion years ago, the only species was phytoplankton.

The president comment was for humour.

jmo... but the survey results likely have less to do with religious beliefs and are much more the result of the phrases "the sun rises in the east, and sets in the west". People hear these sayings from the time they were kids, which could easily give someone the impression that the sun is the sphere that is actually moving.

So evolution is opinion? Or fact? What about the Biblical evidence that's "laid out in front of them"? Why should we dismiss that evidence? Are we a "buffoon" for dismissing The Bible? Finding evidence of a boat very similar to the ark in a place where the ark is very likely to be has certainly developed "theories"...... very similar to the way fossils develop "theories"...... why do you get to dismiss/accept one and not the other?

I actually think the bible has a lot of good historical data. It's one of the few logs of the Sumerians. Keep in mind that a bunch of scribes wrote it. It comes down to how much you trust a scribe. Why do you make it one or the other? Can't they compliment?
