He just blew up the Sooners camp. Derby showed tremendous velocity and seemed to have really improved his mechanics and overall accuracy.
OU insiders said that if it werent for Bell this would their guy. I wonder if Lane is on him.

He seems to have the size, but from looking at his stats it looks like he is a run first guy.
Does anyone know what system his high school runs?

Son of former Hawk John Derby. Younger brother of walk-on freshman Zach Derby. A.J. will more than likely end up a Hawk it is just a matter of which sport he'll be playing. He has Division I-A talent in both football and basketball. He is said to already have an offer from Iowa in basketball (his basketball thread is linked above.) Has the athleticism to play multiple positions on the gridiron including S, LB, TE, FB.

Derby says he can bench 265-pounds, squat 405 and claims a 35-inch vertical jump and 4.6 forty speed

Analysis: It's rare that an elite level quarterback can sneak to a team's camp but that's exactly what happened in the case of the Iowa City four-star signal caller. Derby showed tremendous velocity and seemed to have really improved his mechanics and overall accuracy since the last time SoonerScoop.com had a chance to see him. If Oklahoma didn't already have a similarly elite quarterback it would seem that an offer would definitely be headed Derby's way.

Per Rivals... He has also been invited to compete against Scroggins and Co. to earn an offer from USC. Seriously, why aren't we on this kid? 6-5, 218- I don't think you can be a better size for a QB in high school. Just look at that offer list: Alabama, Florida, FSU, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, etc. Somebody get some info...

I agree but what position are most of those schools recruiting at? Rivals projects him as an athlete but he looks like a solid QB to me. I think he deserves a look by the staff IMO.

Although Derby played safety as a sophomore, he says he’s being recruited to play quarterback.

“I’m a quarterback. Everyone is recruiting me as a QB. I’m a good leader and am really competitive. I have the ability to leave the pocket and can make something out of nothing. I definitely look to throw first, but I’m not afraid to take off and run and make things happen. I’m working a lot on my feet. I also want to improve my accuracy in my throws.”

Per Scout...

The real question is why haven't the UT coaches been to Iowa City. This guy looks like a solid prospect, but running is certainly a big part of his game. He would need a little time to develop into an elite passer. JMO

That is a very good question. I have been wondering the same thing about Nottingham. He looks to be a solid prospect also, but UT hasn't even been mentioned evaluating him...

UF is on him as a TE from what I undersrtand

You are probably right. Scout (where he said everyone wants him at QB) doesn't even show him with a UF offer...

sorry guys...i just dont see a QB here. All of his throws are lofted to open guys down field. He may be able to throw it far but this offense he is in doesnt look like one where he has to thread teh needle or make any difficult passes. sorry...but i see the same play about everytime...a play action loft teh ball downfield to open WR. good athlete though...tough kid, but a QB...dont think so.
