LV, Saban, or anyone what is the deal with this kid. He originally was a 2011 class prospect and commited to Memphi, but now is graduating in 2010. Has UA and UT high on his boards and will be visiting this weekend. Just curious how good is he.

Edit: nice edit right on cue

He is a Junior. Rivals is wrong.

He is a junior but now he is graduating a year early. Originally a part of the 2011 class but now 2010. I think alot of schools weren't following him yet because he is a junior.

Here is the link to prove he is a Junior. He committed as soon as he got his first offer. His HS is not that good, but they are only in like year 3 of existence. I think a lot of people in Memphis expect him to waiver when bigger schools come calling. If Larry Porter ends up as the Memphis coach, I think he can keep him there.

Only a junior, cornerback 'Tre' Ballentine picks Tigers The Commercial Appeal

I am decommitting from Memphis and oh, by the way, I am going to graduate a year early from school. Maybe it is just me, but something does not quite add up here.

I agree, but probably not graduating. He might have all his core courses done buy the spring so he can enter college. I have seen stranger things before.

it is what it is..no conspiracy.....the kid may have the opportunity to graduate early...he was committed to Memphis...but now he wants to open things up......he is getting looks from Tennessee among other SEC schools.....has great size....I would just stay in the 2011 class....if I were him...

I am not claiming conspiracy, I just think that this came out of left field. For recruiting purposes, I would think he would have made this known earlier in the process.

I wold think that LSU will have a good shot with him bc of his families and coaches familiarity with Larry Porter. Also, if Porter becomes the Memphis coach like expect to him, I think he can keep this kid.

I remember hearing a scouting report that suggested he's the kind of guy who excels at camps---people like his athleticism (speed/size), but he hasn't dominated in games the way you would expect, based on those workouts.

Like Carlos said, he will improve his stock if he waits till 2011. He can develop and earn more offers.

I agree that another year would benefit him, but keep in mind that he now plays for a team that is in only its first or second year playing a full varsity schedule. They are playing some pretty good and established competition. The school he transferred from is nothing to brag about either.

Did Ballentine grow up liking one school above the rest?

“Yes sorta,” Ballentine said. “I grew up liking Tennessee. They are definitely recruiting me hard right now.”

“It was incredible,” Ballentine said. “I loved the game day atmosphere there. It’s crazy seeing over 100,000 fans rooting for one team.”

Per Scout... He says he has offers from UT, Bama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Louisville...

I like Washington, but I may rather have this guy over any in-state player not named Antonio Richardson. He has the ability to project at 3 different positions.

I agree. I think the Top 3 guys in state are Richardson, Redden and Lonnie.

That is a good list.

I think that a lot of people overlook Lonnie because he comes from a relatively unknown school in Memphis. His H.S. has only been around 3 or maybe 4 years. Put this kid at MUS, CBHS, White Station and he would get more pub.

This kid may be tough pull. Porter will definitely have a good shot at keeping him at Memphis. Outside of Memphis, I think that UT, Alabama, and LSU are the major players for now.

At 6-foot-3 and 193-pounds, Ballentine has all the athleticism that a coach could desire in a prospect his age. He only started playing football in the 9th grade, so he has a lot of upside and will only continue to improve. He also runs track, and he may want to try to continue that in the college ranks as well, along with football.

"The biggest factor will probably be the academic side of it," she continued. "We are really stressing that he be able to get a degree. Football is second. I think what he will factor into his choice is his comfort level. Is he a good fit? That's what I think he'll be thinking about. Then, of course, it's the relationship with the coaches. The distance is not so much a factor. It's more about him being able to fit in and feel comfortable, to feel like it's family and have a relationship with the coaching staff.

"Schools that I talk to keep telling me that they like me because I am a big corner. I can be physical and I can play press coverage," Ballentine said. "Everyone says they likes me as a corner, except LSU who has talked to me about playing safety. My preference would be to play cornerback."

"I definitely have interest in them," Ballentine offered. "I grew up watching the Vols. I don't know a lot about the new staff. I have talked to coach (Charlie) Baggett and he is a really nice guy. I just need to learn more about them.
