Heading into the 1982 season, the defending SEC Champion Crimson Tide had won 9 out of the 11 SEC Championships from 1971-1981. Georgia won the other 2 SEC Championships ('76, '80). I must however mention that Kentucky tied for the SECC in 1976.
Alabama also had 3 national championships ('73, '78, '79) during that time. They were undefeated (12-0) in '79, and in 6 other seasons finished 11-1. Besides the 3 #1 finishes, the Tide also finished #2 in 3 seasons ('71, '74, '77) , and finished in the top 10 each of the previous 11 seasons. It would have been 21 seasons in a row of being in the top 10 if not for a #12 finish in 1968.
I'm not sure of some of the younger fans realize how dominating Alabama was. Up until 1971, Tennessee and Alabama were tied (23-23-7) in overall meetings with each other. (Currently, Alabama holds the edge 44-37-7) Alabama had only 9 SEC Championships prior to 1971, while Tennessee had 8 SEC Championships. (Currently, Alabama has 21 SECC and Tennessee 13). Alabama had 7 'recognized' national championships and Tennessee had 3. (Currently, Alabama has 11 NC and Tennessee has 4).
Note: 'recognized' means officially 'recognized' by the NCAA as a valid National Championship ranking.
