He was on a covid rant when i listened. He had a 6pm show before that and had been kind of political there as well. He's entitled to his opinion, but thats not what I'm looking for in sports radio (especially when I'm trying to navigate through traffic on the way to work).

That's the exact reason I quit listening to Clay Travis. He went all in on politics. As you said he's entitled to his opinion but not what I'm looking for.

I don't think Travis had a lot of insight into sports to start with and he knew it. He used the politics as a crutch to keep listeners that agreed with what he said coming back. Turned out to be a really smart move business-wise.

Wow
You changed my mind, oh mighty wise one:rolleyes:
obviously you never listened to Plaster. He was the most anti Vol on radio. It pained him when 104 signed onto the Vol Network.

But those of us who had to listen to him already knew that.

I listened and he’s a good friend of mine. You have your opinion….and That’s fine. Yes, he’s a Vandy grad and all, but he knows his sports.

Travis has always been a bomb thrower/hot take artist and I think he found out over time that works even better in politics than it does in sports. He also figured out that there was a market for sports coverage with a conservative political bent given the perception that a lot of mainstream sports coverage had a liberal bent.

The one thing I'll give him credit for is even back when he was still on 3HL he made it clear he didn't consider himself a "sports journalist". He's always been pretty open that he's a "hot take" guy. I can take some of that but I always thought he was pretty much a low rent Jim Rome/Colin Coward type. I pretty much wrote him off after he decided to go full troll with James Franklin towards UT fans.

He knows his sports and was well connected but the last 2-3 years he was on the air he was terrible.

Yeah, I agree. Honestly, I think what he actually wanted to do initially was be a southern Dave Portnoy. Portnoy actually tried to hire Clay to run a "Barstool South" platform several years ago. Clay said no and ended up starting Outkick, which I think he envisioned initially as being a southern version of Barstool Sports, and it led to something of a feud between them. Over time I think Clay has found out Barstool had the market cornered on that kind of content, so he went super political. He's a very shrewd businessman, although I think he believes probably only 25% of what comes out of his mouth.

The old show with Howard and the other guy was decent because they somewhat knew what they were talking about and had decent local contacts. I spent ten minutes listening to Martin rant about politics on his first day and the only reason I've listened to 104.5 since then is for live UT or titans games.
