Gator fans: Do you think there's a realistic chance Mac is fired this year? Would he need to go 7-5 or worse to get canned?

Just got a contract extension in July 2017.

McElwain, 55, has led the Gators to a 19-8 record and two SEC East titles since arriving in Gainesville. His new deal, which runs through 2022 season, includes a $200,000 raise to $4.48 million, which ranks fifth among SEC coaches.

He also got a significant bump in potential bonuses, jumping from a maximum of $450,000 annually to $825,000.

Winning a national championship would now pay McElwain $400,000 instead of $250,000, and he can earn up to $100,000 annually (previous high was $4,000) for his team's academic performance.

The school also increased McElwain's buyout, raising the figure for "termination without cause" from $2.25 million to $2.5 million for each year remaining on the deal.

If he was fired at the end of 2017 he would have 5 years left. His buyout would be 12,500,000. That's not counting his assistant coaches buyouts if they have any. Don't see them firing him anytime soon.

Wow. That plus Chip's inevitable salary and contract demands. He'll have several big-time programs coming after him. Don't think he inks a deal unless he gets $6 million/year and a long leash, at least 5-6 years.

So if Chip happened to fail, UF would be out somewhere in the neighborhood of $40-$50 million.

Don't think he'll ever coach college again. All the West coast jobs are locked up. hardly any colleges or boosters that will give a coach full reign.

I'm going to guess he wants another NFL job.

UCLA, Arizona, and Arizona State could come open. I don't see him getting another crack at the NFL.

This can't be healthy for him.

What's scary about the East?

Nothing. And it's been that way for awhile.

Bama ain't going anywhere til Saban leaves, but he won't be there forever.

The race is to be set up when he is gone. So far, no one has positioned themselves to do that with any confidence in either division.
