"Who's that guy," asked one running back. Another replied, "I don't know but he is HUGE". As the events began and after a dynamic warm up by the Schuman's staff the story quickly unfolded. In the standing vertical jump a few competitors took reps and everyone was wowed by one young man who hit 34". Than Lyerla stepped up and you could sense the anticipation. But there was that mood and another athlete offered that "he is a big guy so don't expect to much". Lyerla took his first rep and was so far over the top of the sticks that they had to give him a redo after adjusting them. On his next rep Lyerla hit a 38.5" mark. "That is the highest vertical jump all year out of over 18,000 competitors," yelled an elated camp coach.
A roar went up over the crowd and the show was on. Rotating through the events Lyerla went on to take 3rd in the 40 with a solid 4.62, first in the Pro Agility shuttle with a 4.20, and he added 27 reps on the bench. But it was the broad jump that Lyerla impressed most with. The standing Broad Jump is perhaps one of the oldest drills we see at these events and yet one of the very best indicators of explosiveness. In order to succeed you must put several muscle groups into action at a split second.
So as Lyerla approached there was a sense that something big was about to happen. To hit 10 feet plus would be a major accomplishment and put him in the top group nationwide. So as Colt launched himself skyward and to a 10'7" distance the crowd and his competitors could only watch in sheer appreciation for what he had done. His second rep was even better. He hit a 10'10" mark. "Wow that was amazing," said the coach recording the scores. "Thanks," offered Lyerla running off for some water. Within about 3 minutes he was called back to the testing station by Camp Director Brad Vicarro.
"You have to go again. Colt you just broke the all time Schuman's record. You have to prove it" offered Vicarro "I need to see this". And so with little anticipation Lyerla came back and repped a 10'7", 10'10" and a 10'9" back to back. "It's a record," confirmed Vicarro. The camp went on and Lyerla proved why these physical traits are more than just for testing as he man handled his way to the camp MVP award.
Same HS as Erik Ainge. Kid is the very definition a physical FREAK. Plays RB and slot for his HS team. Doesn't show any interest in Tennessee. Yet.
