And Arkansas, ND, and Clemson? I know UT hasn't been very successful the last 5 seasons or so, but those teams haven't been very flashy or attractive from a defensive standpoint the last few years either. If those are MacKensie's true Top-4 schools, then he is definitely being truthful about wanting to play for a team where he can play immediately because none of them have a solid defense. In fact, a true, solid defense is what Arkansas and Clemson have been missing the last couple of seasons.
ND, I just don't see it. I don't see a FLA kid of MacKensie's caliber wanting to play for that defense. Clemson obviously is attractive to current prospects for many reasons. Kentucky is terrible on both sides of the ball and doesn't hold a candle to UT in facilities, coaching staff, or NFL pipeline. Of course they did beat UT last season, but still. And I don't see Arkansas either.
UT, regardless of their recent struggles, have still had some pretty solid, influential All-Stars on their defenses. Eric Berry is a given. These prospects know who EB is. Most should know who Jerod Mayo is. He is playing good in the NFL. To a lesser extent, Robert Ayers, who was still a 1st round NFL selection. I believe Dan Williams went 1st round. Janzen Jackson and Demetrice Morley didn't make it out of UT alive, but they were flashy to watch.
ND has Teo right now and had Harrison Smith. Arkansas has had a CB and a DE drafted 1st round the last 5 years or so but that is it and those two have been busts thus far in the NFL. Clemson has had some success getting some DEs in the NFL. I'm not even going to mention KY. Point is, UT can sell playing time and should be able to sell getting defensive prospects to be successful in college and transition them into the NFL. At least moreso than the other teams mentioned.
If MacKensie visits UT officially or unofficially with his brother MacKenro, I really, really like UT's chances. If he doesn't visit, I don't think there is a chance.
