Josh Newkirk
Class of 2013
#23 PG
Tennessee recently offered.

*recently re-classified to 13' class

Strengths:
A reclassified member of 2013, the strength of his game has always been his ability to get by players. He easily transitions from scorer to playmaker and can do both. He owns a presence at his position and the kind of head strong game you want out of a playmaker. Newkirk uses his quickness to can get into the lane sometimes at will. Newkirk is a good athlete as well. His ball handling and passing are solid and he can hit the open jumper off the catch or dribble with range to the arc. Newkirk is also a good defender that plays with great energy. Pressuring the ball and anticipating in the passing lanes are also strengths of Newkirk.

Weaknesses:
He will need to steady his perimeter game and become a better perimeter player. Needs to cut down on the turnovers and settle for simple instead of spectacular. Want him to continue becoming a vocal guard. Adding strength must be at the top of the list for Newkirk as he continues to develop in for him to not get knocked off the ball on offensive and to be able to handle taller or more physical guards defensively.

Bottom Line:
He has a ceiling that could take him to higher levels which will be predicated on the resume he builds with his high school team. Adding a jumpshot will enhace his PG ranking. Overall Newkirk is a solid all around point guard that has great upside.

Blowing up the AAU scene this summer, has been very impressive. Dropped 25 PTs today and has been referred to as impossible to keep out of the lane. Also heard comparisons of end to end speed similar to John wall, and a great finisher around the rim. This guy is rising up my wish list very rapidly.

Here's some comments from those that have seen him lately:

“@BigShotsReport: End to end D-1 Sports PG Josh Newkirk has 1 speed and not many reach his speed in 2013 class in open court”

“@Justinbyerly: @jnewkirk1 aka Josh Newkirk, 6'1, 2013 out of Word of God and D-One Sports, is about as quick as they come. Kid can fly. Great passer.”

“@Justinbyerly: Josh Newkirk, a speedy PG out of Raleigh (NC) Word of God, displayed a high passing level at #ReebokShowdown draws defenses. @jnewkirk1”

I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is definitely the PG I want to add in the 2013 class. He recently reaffirmed his top 4, which does indeed include Tennessee.

With the commitment of Poole to g tech, that could REALLY help us with newkirk. He had g tech in his top 4 with us, and many think we were 1/2 with them, the addition of Poole could definitely make Tennessee more attractive.

Hopefully the staff pushes hard now with pooles commitment, and maybe we could pull an early commitment from newkirk.

Really want this guy.

Landry
Newkirk
Hubbs
Nichols
Agau

My realistic wish right now!

I was on rivals board and i posted that
Newkirk
Hubbs
Nichols
but apparently nobody in the country thinks that the Vols are in the mix for any of them.Apparently Hubbs is going to Duke or the gators or Memphis, or Candy
And Nichols a Duke lock because they are his dream offer and he is a lifelong fan of Duke and Newkirk to an acc school only .Ihate how when people talk about these kids that they none respect the Vols enough to expect a good player will go to UT.

I think this is the kid we need to make or break this class... You sign this kid and you have a solid pg for the next 3-4 years

Scout had a story on Newkirk's visit to Georgia Tech this past weekend, which quoted him saying he wanted to visit Tennessee and Xavier before making a Fall decision. He said he was open, but it seemed pretty clear those were the finalists unless one of the big boys comes calling.

Yea those have been the main teams for awhile, and with fellow PG Poole already committing to GT it could help us. Then again one of those 2, probably Poole could easily play the 2 as a combo guard.

IMO Newkirk is one of the most important guys were after, get a good PG with a year to learn behind senior golden and you're in good hands.

Rob Lewis is saying if we sign Newkirk landry is gone, or any PG were still recruiting for that matter. Said were bringing in one PG.

That has been my thought since we've still been pursuing other PGs since Landry's commitment. We have too many pieces we need to fill and not so many scholarships to do it with. There was no way we bring in 2 true PGs in this class.

My thought as well, just figured I'd let it known that's what Lewis was saying as well, he's usually pretty solid on info.
