'14 AL LB Gavin Bryant (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Huh...thought for sure you were highest on Gaulden. Not that it matters, they are all essential to our turn around. GBO!

Nah, but it's funny that now the Volquest guys are saying he would be a five star if he had played all 4 years. I said in his thread he's a better defensive prospect than Adoree people wanted to argue me down. :) I guess they needed the VQ stamp of approval.

VQ has been saying that about Gaulden since mid season. The recent comment was just repeating that stance.

Adoree is a special athlete no doubt, but you never know how it's going to turn out for all of these guys and you can't rule out that some of our recruits might end up having a better college career than he.

You were on Gavin early, so decided to look at what I could find closely. You were right. I am right there with you on what I think of him and how badly I have wanted to see an inside LB with his abilities playing for us.

My problem is that I see a half dozen or more in this class on D that can make that big of an impact at their positions! It is an amzing group of guys. As good as Adoree is, I did not want there to be a prima donna problem where he got special treatment. He needed to come in and earn it like the rest.

With Gaulden his style is tailor made for the SEC. Playing CB he'll be in on some big plays. The way we play coverage with our CBs getting to play some cover 2 shell a lot at times he'll be making some big hits coming up. He hits harder than Sutton and enjoys it. He'll have to be taught like any prospect but his skill set is made for this rough league. He's no pretty boy at CB and I like it. Look at the Dennard kid at MSU, he's a rough and tough CB. He's not really pretty in coverage but he can cover like hell. I want to see if CWM can develop Gaulden in the same type of player. :)

I don't feel like very many people disagreed. Lots of folks trust your DB evals.

No some were acting as if they weren't close and Gaulden can't play on the corner. Kid is very similar to the old school hardnosed CBs the Buckeyes used to roll out year after year. I wouldn't mind having a Nate Clements or Ahmed Plummer doing work outside for us. :)

Only thing I wasn't sure about was whether he was slated to compete at corner or pretty much just at safety.

Star at either spot IMO.

Kid like Gaulden is in the mold if the Seahawks style of player. That's how I like my guys. Rough and ready to punish. Bryant, McDowell, TKjr, Bates, Johnson, and most of our guys are like that. They are fast and physical at the point of attack. They do not go backwards when they make contact with a ball carrier. I love that about these guys. We saw intimidation on display last night in the Super Bowl. Bama has a similar passing game stylistic to the Broncos. I want our guys to just blow their guys up all damn game like the Seahawks were doing.

Yep, everyone saw firsthand last night how effective big, physical corners are. Every one of those short crossing routes Denver completed got lit up by someone in the secondary with little to no yards after the catch. Denver's WRs were getting bullied all over the fied in coverage also. Playing physical like that will throw off even the best offense's timing.

One thing that this class of defenders will bring... and Sutton / jrm will fall into that category as well.. is not being scared to be put in space with a ball carrier and making the play. Seattle's defense doesn't care to contain and pile drive someone 1on1. We need that.

McDowell needs to be used like Cam Chancellor. He was the difference maker last night. He set the tone very early and often. Defenses feed off big hits. That's why I can't wait on this class to get here. Also hope Maggitt will be back 100%.

Also the WRs on the outside got dominated too. They didn't do a thing when the pressure was on.

A friend told me yesterday that "you'll know Auburn has missed on Evans if Boston gets an offer".

I don't know who Boston is but I hope that alleviates any fears about a last minute push for Bryant.

I think you were the impetus for me seeing him as a corner...before that I thought he'd be the consolation prize for missing out on Cortez...now with both you want him at corner if his skills translate...and I see that Seattle type corner in his skillset.

Hadn't seen Bryant's senior film until just now but WOW, he is the total package. He's got the size to play as a freshman, he's extremely physical but plays under control at the same time, his closing speed appears to be close to elite for a MLB and he also reads and reacts quickly which makes him that much faster...EXPLOSIVE!

This guy is a freight train and he jumps off the film. He is the most underrated player that I can remember us getting in some time. A 3 star rating is ridiculous (would love to see his rating if he was a bama commit), he should be a high 4 star and in my opinion should be somewhere around the top 100, not even being in the top 250 is a joke IMO. I love the group of LBs we have coming in--Bates, Berry, Bryant, Dews, Johnson, and Weathered--that quantity and quality at the same time. They've all have the potential to be good SEC LBs and a few have all conference potential IMO but Bryant may just be the best of the bunch (tough choice between he and Bates). I'm not sure what his coverage skills are like but he is a monster in run support, he is a perfect fit for UT and the SEC. Glad we have this guy on our side, not let's just get him in and let him get to busting heads.

I'd love for McDowell to have that sort of impact in the middle of the field. Chancellor is a beast.\

Also it sounds like Mosely is really turning some heads during winter workouts. If he can buckle down on his technique and add a little weight, he's got the potential to lock down his side.
