'14 DC CB D'Andre Payne (UT commit 4/3/13)

When I took my visit, I fell in love with the program, and how coach Jones is putting things together there,” Payne said minutes after announcing his decision. “I saw my position coach, (defensive backs) coach (Willie) Martinez, and I saw him in action and I really enjoyed him coaching and I like guys like that.

“I can’t wait to play under those guys. It’s everything down there. It’s a good place to be.”

“They need DBs bad,” he said. “I think I can go down and make things happen. I can make big plays.”

“Everybody has a weight room, regardless of how big it is or how great it looks,” Payne said. “Facilities didn’t have anything to do with my decision. I just think what they have going on down there, and what they’re trying to do in the next couple of years, that is what helped me make my decision. I want to be a part of that.”

Payne, who is rated the No. 26 cornerback in the 2012 class, will now turn his attention to recruiting his teammate, four-star*Jalen Tabor, the No. 5 cornerback in the nation.

“We talk about schools, but I haven’t actually talked to him about committing anywhere,” Payne said. “Wherever he goes, I want him to go to a place that is best for him. Wherever he goes, I know he’s going to excel and do well.“

But, of course, now that I am committed, I am going to be on there and I am going to try and make him commit to Tennessee. But wherever he goes, I know I’ll be proud of him.”

Payne has loose hips and is fluid in his back pedal. He changes direction well and has very good acceleration and reads plays well. He also is comfortable in run support and willing to play a physical style, either in press coverage or making a tackle.

In breaking down his junior tape (below), let’s point to a few things that accentuate his attributes. The first place to check out comes at the 2:03 mark. Payne is playing off a receiver in coverage, and quickly reads the quarterback rolling to his side. The pass is complete, but Payne shows very good explosion and acceleration to close out the play and make the tackle.

Moving to run support, at the 2:22 Mark Payne shows his skills and willingness to make the play. He reads run from the edge, and gets in position before breaking down and make a strong form tackle.

The physical element of Payne’s game is on display at the 4:!5 mark when he locks on a receiver at the line of scrimmage and then runs stride for stride with the receiver. He is strong, sure and fluid in his coverage. So much so, Payne looks like he is on a comfortable Sunday stroll while staying step-for-step with the receiver.

Finally, let’s move the 6:40 mark of the tape. Obviously, Payne is heading to Tennessee to play cornerback, but this play illustrates his ability. Payne’s body control is tremendous, with his head barely moving as he weaves his way through the defense. He oozes smooth.

Rivals Richmond Camp

Outside of one or two plays, Payne had an outstanding day. The Tennessee commit was aggressive when jamming receivers, had good hips and footwork and was fast enough not to let receivers get away from him. There were a few jump balls that Payne could not get to, but his timing was excellent, especially when he could anticipate the route.
