“They really want me on campus real bad,” Sawyer said Saturday while watching the Atlanta Nike Football Training Camp at Buford High School, where he sat out after recently undergoing shoulder surgery that’s expected to sideline him until this summer.

“I’ve got to call (Tennessee defensive line) coach (Steve) Stripling and talk to him, but the main thing is they want to get me on campus real bad — get up there.”

“I mean, I liked the atmosphere. Being in Knoxville was pretty smooth,” he said.

“I like Tennessee. I see they’re trying to do different things. I talk to my friend, (rising senior offensive tackle) Ja’Wuan James, up there. He graduated (from North Gwinnett) the year before I got there. ... I really want to go look at their facilities. I like their coaches and whatnot.”

“They say I’m real important,” he said. “Coach Stripling, he’s really on me real hard, trying to get me to come up there. (We talk) probably, like, once a week.

Many of the Vols’ fans also have caught Sawyer’s attention through social media over the past few months.

“Tennessee, they show a lot of love — their fans do,” he said.

On other schools and a decision timeline:

Alabama and Georgia remain at the top of Sawyer’s list, he said, because of their coaches, facilities and their relative proximity to his home.

“I mean, they both show a lot of love, and I just love the facilities, and they’re close to home,” he said, adding that it’s important to him to play at a college within “driving distance for my parents.”

Sawyer said he doesn’t plan to make a decision any time soon on where he wants to play.

“I’m going to wait ‘til the Army game,” he said, referring to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 in San Antonio.
